Hi! Im new to the forums here and have a dready question that is really bugging me. I want to start dreads someday - I really want them NOW but my mom says no- and I want to use the rip and twist method. But I've seen while searching the web, two different descriptions of rip and twist. On most sites it is described like this: http://www.perfectdreadlocks.com/Methods/twist-rip.html and this: http://www.dreadlocks.cc/Methods/twist&rip.html But on the version presented above it does not sound like it actually mats the hair into dreads. It just sounds like sectioned, messy twists. ** NOTE: I dont plan to use wax on my hair no matter what** And the second version I've heard of is mostly used for maintainance I guess. Where you section your hair, twist the sections tightly, split the twist at the bottom, then rip the pieces in opposite directions. This method sounds more effective and I tried a practice piece on my hair and it worked pretty nicely. The first method sounds quicker but I havent heard any reviews online of people making dreads with this method. There is soo much info out there on the web about dreadlocks, its hard to know what is right or just a scam to sell products. Which t&r should I use? Have you used the first method? Sorry for such a long post.
What those links are talking about is rubbing then ripping then twisting. Twist and rip is when you take a section of un-knotted hair, twist the hair, then split the tip in two and "rip" those two sections apart, repeat. The first rip should create tangles near the roots, and each progressive rip adds until you are tangled from root to tip. I rubbed and ripped on the top/front of my head (no twisting or waxing) because the back was knotting naturally and I got tired of waiting for the front to catch up. If you use the forum search function you can look up older posts regarding twist and rip... like this one: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=373895&highlight=twist+rip
Im 15. My mom says no because she "doesnt want me to ruin my hair" by getting dreads. My father is a little more open to the idea of me getting dreads but he still doesnt like it. I've tried telling my mom the reasons I want dreads, but she just ignores me. I even typed up an email and sent it to her in the hopes that she'd reply but no. I think I have really good reasons for wanting dreads, but apparently she doesnt. Im gonna try and have my dad talk to her into letting me get them. We'll see what happens. Wish me luck guys!
Just do it anyway. If she says she's gonna make you shave your head be like "fine but if you make me shave my head I'm getting and Aryan Brotherhood tattoo". Which would she rather have for a son? A kid with dreads? Or a kid with dead Jews in his closet.
Lawlz yeah. I told her I could just do 'em myself. But I'd rather take the persuading method of getting my dreads. After all, I dont like to see my parents angry with me *does puppy face* PS: I is a lady
The methods listed there sound like they will only work if you use wax. Do you have pics of anyone that has used that method as described in those links because I can't imagine they would work on anyone iwth really straight hair. I agree wtih aFoolOnaHill about his T & R method. It's very easy to do.
It's not MY TnR method, heheh, and like I said I used rub and rip. I have curly hair though so I wouldn't know how effective it would be for "really straight hair." Good luck frownyface... you're mom's gonna have to realize that sooner or later you're gonna do what you want with your own body or else she's gonna spend a lot of time being upset when she should be spending it on eing a supportive parent.
clearly this forum is being taken over by us youngins. As for the method- I think the twist and rip most people use refers to whatever someone else said here (far to lazy to scroll). I did a few that way, I would rub them to get a few knots, and then pulled them apart down the middle to push the knots up, for quite a while. Takes some time, I'd say, but the ones I did like that are noticeably more mature than the backcombed bits (which are just about equal to the englect bits-if not less mature) And hey! Here is some more rambling for you: As for your parents, all it takes is persistence. And if all else fails, just neglect. The changes will be so subtle that by the time it becomes apparent you have dreads, it won't be such a drastic change, if that makes sense.
Yeah I think I'll do the sectioning, twisting and ripping. Also I think the freeform method would be a good option because my hair is very poofy and wavy. The only problem with freeform is how long it takes.
Thanks everybody I actually think neglect would be a good rout if all else fails, my hair is big and poofy/frizzy and when I sleep with it down and not tied back, little section and clusters of hair form together. So you guys just rub your head then rip them into sections? (like in the links) Sorry, this whole thing is kinda confusing
I was confused at first too when I heard about the concept of it. I think this is what everyone really means. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VimvRHBJTqw
Ohh thats easy. Thats how I made my little practice dready I was suprised at how tight it was, and it was done while my hair was flat ironed, so I can only imagine how knotty it could get if my hair was frizzy again.
People 'round here have used mostly TnR, backcombing, and "natural/neglect." There might be a few who have crocheted and a few like myself who have rubbed and ripped uh ohh, don't be confused... locks are one of the simplest things in the world, they only get complicated when you try and mess with them or force them to look a certain way. All you really need is to keep your hair clean (which some people achieve rinsing their hair with plain old water) and to not comb/brush or run you fingers though your hair (one of the reasons I think the front of my mop wasn't locking as fast as the back)
