Hey there!!! So its been like 9 months or so since I've been on these boards! I've been so busy! But anywho...this post is about backcombing. I had a friend backcomb my hair over 1 1/2 years ago. The part that was backcombed is STILL NOT LOCKED. DONT DO IT!! if I could do it over I would go completely natural! I dont have access to my camera right now, but I'll see if i can take a few pictures later of my hair. The part that has grown out from my roots is nicely locked, while the backcombed part is loopy, loose, and in some areas looks the same as when she first did them. I pretty much did nothing to them...just let them be. I have one pic that was taken about 3 weeks ago at my baby shower and you can see how the lighter parts of the dreads are loopy and just blah. I have half a mind to cut out all the parts that were backcombed....its been real tempting. Has anyone else experienced that their hair didnt lock that well when backcombed (compared to the new growth)?
No, mine is locking well and it's been backcombed. It's been a year for me, and they are doing well. You might just be an anomaly.. dun dun dun!!
I backcombed. The ones that didn't fall out ( the back of my head fell out completely) matured really well and at a rate faster than my loose hair, which I left to it's own devices. Both kinds of my dreads got loopy before maturity, just at different phases. All my roots come in the same. At two years, I can tell no difference. So no. I've not had any negative experiences with backcombing.
Mine are almost 2 years old and I have a few loops actually. Where the new growth grown through it's properly locked up. They're not nearly as loopy as yours though.
I think yours look great for 9mos. for realz, uhhm I think that's how it goes. some parts lock up fast and others take agesss! As long as the new growth is locking good then they ain't no problem
didn't she say 1,5 years? but i think it's pretty normal that the roots lock up faster, with backcombed and with natural locks. the ends just fall out faster. How often do you wash?
^Yes. I think if I did it over, I wouldn't backcomb, it seemed like a waste since everything fell out for me as well. All of the underneath hair on muh head is still completely undreaded and totally unknotted(around 7 months).
Had your backcombed hair been bleached or dyed at all? Maybe that's why the texture has stayed different. Nice dreads btw!
your dreads are sweet for 9 months. Even natural dreads go through a loopy phase....or at least mine are.
LMAO, why would you tell people never to backcomb? plenty of people on this forum have backcombed and are having no problems with tightness or loops or anything, i am one of them? my locks are pretty tight at the moment, not impenetrable like pats were or anything but yer, maybe you should comb em out if your so unhappy with them
My hair was dyed/bleached and I never thought that that could have been the problem...thanks daisymelan And I wish they looked like this at 9 months!! They'll be 2 years in Dec. The whole reason I decided to backcomb is I've have many friends who've have some sweet dreads come out of the backcombing process...but I guess I forgot about the dye (only noticed once they started growing) and didnt factor that into the locking process. Oh well...whats done is done! =o)
