Yeah I used to work in Subway while I was waiting to start this job and they were pretty chilled out about it. I work fir Esso now as an apprentice electrical engineer. where I live it's literally the best place to be working without going into the city! So it's kinda a big deal!

i dont mean to make this a bickering comment dan, please dont take it as such.

why did you get dreads if a tidy appearance and professional appearance are things that you desire?

i just ask because i think one of the reasons that i like my dreads are that they are kind of a hinderance to those things. i enjoy the challange of having to rise above that look and letting my personality and qualifications shine through, especially when it comes to getting a job. i enjoy the challange, and also i kind of feel that it can help me meet my goals of starting my own company.

as far as what you could do, i would try aloe, or knotty boy (whos gunna flame me for this plug? LOL though i'm not really pluggin it, just throwing it out there i was bored and looked up options that arent wax for the man) makes locksteady tightening gel that is basically aloe +. it has panthenol in it, which is a moisterizer. wiki says it lubricates hair, but i'd imagine its not too bad for it. i'd also imagine it controls frizzies and is a much nicer alternative to wax.

the HQ makes the dreadbutter shit. but i wont even tell you to try that. they dont list ingredients on the site, and dreadhead hq honestly just irks me. that johnny clean guy or whatever his name is is one of this planets top 5 biggest douchers, his hair looks like rotten asshole and i kind of feel like the products (due to their names and spellings) and the entire website is designed for children 15 and under, because i dont feel that anybody older then that would want to buy a product called "supa dread budda" from a douchebag with ugly hair trying to make your hair look as supa cool as his.

not to mention they list in the description for dread butter that "Dreads are starting to get the rep for being "sex hair"..... DreadHeads will love the way newly waxed dreads feel smoother, softer and happier after a quick buttering. Everybody loves how dreadwax helps locks come together faster and tighter but nobody wants to be a tacky wax-head. Butta is the answer"

they kind of sell the butta as something to goop over wax so it feels greasy and silky instead of greasy and sticky.

anyway, if you do end up going a product route with taming your hair a bit, post up on your opinion on whatever you use, because i've never met anybody that has tried any of the stuff like that.

I get where you're coming from and It's also personal preference I suppose. want dreads but I don't want messy dreads. I know dreads are meant to be messy but I had a friend who had real neat dreads and I guess, without wanting to copy him, I just wanted mine to be neat like that. (Before someone comments on this, I DO want my dreads to my my own)

You can have dreads and look tidy and presentable. Infact I really like that look. Every now and then when I go out for dinner I tie my dreads up and wear a shirt and it does look smart.

And thanks for the advice I had that tightening gel and I found it worked really well. But I think I used it to much at one point cause my hair went dry.

You remember ahoy, but not the nylons on the head while washing hair upsidedown shit? You could look up DonBK's early posts, or I'm sure he would be glad to give you the rundown. For what you're complaining of, his method is probably the way to go.

just try crocheting loose hairs in and stuff that will make it look much tidyer. and not washing i don't think is an option if you want to be presentable.. if you get loops when you wash your dreads aren't dreads yet, because if they're fully tightened they won't loop anymore.

Ahoy Don! Yeah i'm gonna try that and see how it goes. The thing is that after a few days they normally sort themselves out. And for those of you who say that they're not dreads, well they clearly are. They're not mature dreads but how many people here have a full set of mature dreads?

    Thanks Guys!

same for me... they seem like they "lay better" after washing if that makes any sense.

I think my dreads definitely get messier in the short term, but in the long term you want to keep your dreads clean. It helps the hair dread better.

Messiness is quite subjective. I think people with curly hair can look pretty messy even if its not dreads. Dreads just make the loose hairs stand out more because the hair is in identifiable sections.

I would use a combination of very light crochet work and root rubbing. Just enough to get the really rebellious bits in, not trying to get it all tight and perfect with the needle alone. I find a lot of it comes back out anyway, and will only get sucked up by the natural twisting and knotting of the hair with a lot of time and patience. This is why over maintenance with crochet is bad- you turn the dreads into hard thin rocks that can't suck up the hairs naturally. If you just do a bit of light work once every month or so it strikes a balance between keeping the dreads relatively smooth and allowing enough natural knotting to keep them strong and together in the long term.

Don't give up! I'm training to be an architect and know just how important personal appearance is. Just remember that you will fundamentally appear more interesting and individual than every other guy with short gelled hair. Some people love dreads, some hate then and have lots of bad ideas and rumors. But at the end of the day, they'll probably visually remember you, and if you can reinforce that with a powerful personality and attitude, then that can be a major advantage.
