This movie opened last Wednesday on 09-09-09. It was on my to-see list but I was on a ship at sea until Friday. Was going to see it yesterday, but something else came up, so finally I biked between rainstorms today and saw this visually beautiful movie.

I don't know exactly what to write about it. The visuals were stunning. I am always amazed at what these computer artists can do, the detail that they can put on screen.

When I checked Rottentomatoes to get some pics, I noticed the reviews were about even, with 56% for this movie. What was interesting on quickly scanning the one-sentence for each reviewer is that the good ones and bad ones were saying the same thing.

Everyone seems to agree that the visuals were splendid but that the plot could have been better; that it is just another post-apocalyptic movie even if it is made with cute, anthropomorphic puppet ppl who are about half a foot tall.

The story is routine, from Matrix to Terminator. The sophisticated thinking machines that were supposed to protect us, wage war on us instead and soon all humanity is gone. Then up pops 9, (voiced by Elijah Wood) who suddenly becomes conscious and a little confused in his new world. He soon finds others like himself and the story begins as they fight all sorts of mechanized monsters. All the characters are numbered but it centers on 9 because he dares to explore and ask questions and is the catalyst that causes all the reactions.

There's even a hint of romance, tho no one can figure out if there is sex in these stitchpunk characters. 7 has a female voice (Jennifer Connelly) and is the best ninja type fighter of the lot. (She?) seems to take a liking to 9.

I think I liked the movie. Really, just like all the reviewers both for and against this movie you can't argue with the art on screen. That alone makes it worth seeing and I will probably get it on DVD as I did Ratatouille. As for the story, it is a comfortable one - battling the machines that destroyed the world of humans. Lots of action here.

BTW, 2009 seems to be quite a year for 9. There was District 9 in August, 9 this week and in November will be Nine a movie of the Broadway musical. Googling is getting hard. I had to write "Tim Burton 9 movie" because my first entry of "9 movie" kept getting District 9.

It was okay I suppose, but it didn't really keep my attention, I kept drifting off at random parts
