What I mean't was, back in HIS day, they didn't have TV or Radio. Reading was the only entertainment they could get at home. Back then, people loved his work, and some still do today, because he could paint pictures with words. If not the story. You can SEE what he's writing about.

His books are better if you get a shortened version or, if you go to your local library and get an old Wishbone tape of his book

beg to disagree. great expectations, oliver twist and david copperfield are amazing works, by any standards - i can understand that they take some getting through, but a book that is easy and quick to read is hardly challenging now is it?

having said that, i never got further than page 19 of a tale of 2 cities..but i was 14.. :p

    love daisyness xxx

ps having been born on the same day as the aforementioned mr dickens, i may be a little biased :D (7th feb)

Humbug! Anyone who doesn't like their Dickens can send their copies to me. I can always use them for firewood in the beckoning winter that is threatening to chill my withering bones. Hark! Is that a young voice one hears in the darkening sky? Why, I do believe it's young master Pipin preparing for an evensong. What's that I hear him say now? "Keep your books fair ladies and gentlemen if you don't like them and give them to the poor children." Away! Away, young rascal! I'll have you not plaguing these decent gentlefolk! Listen not to this whippersnapper, my fair Dickens haters. Send your books to me. Oh, the thought of warming my toes by the fire from the charcoal they'll make, whilst roasting my chestnuts. Bah! Humbug! Where's my pills?

omg. i remember arguing the same point with my english teacher during my senior year of h.s. i pointed out that dickens violates so many of the basic rules we learned in creative writing (and he didn't even violate them in a good way). a few years later i helped a young co-worker with a paper that basically stated that dickens was not a good author, but we read his books for the commentary on the time period. (she got an a on the paper and all the help i gave her was the topic and some help with finding supporting statements
i've long felt that dickens should be read in social studies or whatever they call it these days), not in english. ugh!

i only read Great Expectations (did try A Tale of 2 cities but it went slightly wrong...!) and i thought it was awesome - one my all time fave. miss havisham (spelling?) was awesome as were the other characters. I mean - does anyone remember the way Dickens described pip's benefactor, the lawyer, his 'dad', the beautiful estelle and the spider character? amazing! and the way everything comes together so beautifully.. wow Good plot and characters - excellent.

it has been a while since i read the book, so forgive my mis-spellings! But you can tell that it made an impresion on me!
