I guess society but that's a bit vague so if you nuance it a little bit, because I think internet has a lot more to offer as t.v.
i haven't watched tv in years. i own one to play dvd documentary films on, but that is about it. i agree with some posters that some tv can be educational, but for the most part, broadcast in general sucks these days.
Most the shows on TV are just kind of loud noises and colours.. and they try to make you believe a certain ideal... but I will own a TV and cable just for hockey.. right now I can get the live games online anyway, but once it gets shut down Im screwed! and right now im bored a lot of the time, small town saving up money to move back to the city
We watch TV on DVD, but sporadically. We get distracted by projects and each other, and wander off to craft or have sex or otherwise actually live our lives. The TV usually only goes on when one of us is alone in the house and working on a sit-down project so we have some sort of outside stimulus, or MASH during mealtime. We haven't had cable for years. At first we couldn't afford it, and we never missed it so we didn't bother when we could.
There's not much the regular channels that I like except maybe for 2 1/2 men, Seinfeld & Everybody loves Raymond. The other shows are more like political propaganda I think. There's always subtle bullshit.
I haven't had a set to watch in years...since I lost my home... So I've had to adapt to other media... But the other week I was at a relatives house...and couldn't believe the amount of disruption during programs..(commercials)... I've gotten use to watching Movies or programs uninterupted on DVD or YouTube ect ect... I found the TV culture to be really hallow...and painting a very ficticious view of how we, as people relate to one another in real life... Like those quirky McDonalds commericals...where everyone is singing some Ronald McDonalds jingle together and smiling.... Commercials really present this plastic lubby dubby view of life in America or anywhere else... But in real life, people aren't that lubby dubby and accepting...and you rarely get service with a smile anywhere anymore... And watching TV recently really showed me how attention grabbing everyone has become lately... Average people, with nothing really to say, held up as sex icons or this or that...no substance what so ever... It's like 'Ok, let me act dorky and cute for the camera'... Ok son, smile for the camera...this is your moment...don't act, don't think, just smile and look cute...and I'll make ya a success kid... And we all see how that sad episode ended... Poor Sanjaya...played like a doll... And many others...and in the end for what?? Anyways...yes I agree with you...tv does kind of dumb you down... I grew up basing much of my expectations of society based on what I watched on TV as a youth...what a mistake that was... But there's still good or decent programing, I particularly like historical shows or TV land where they play older sitcoms...
I only ever watch TV when I'm at someone else's house (which admittedly happens fairly often). Much of the time having the TV on constantly spouting crap in the background grates on my nerves, but there's the occasional programme worth watching. Though the majority of what's on I just find crass or dull. I much prefer the internet for my information/entertainment. On rare occasions I'll use it to watch a specific TV programme, or maybe a film though.
Hate it. I stopped watching TV 2 years ago. If I want some entertainment, I download films that are 30 years old or more.
I used to watch tons and tons of tv. I haven't honestly sat down and watched it in months, though. There are a few shows I'll catch on Netflix, namely Weeds and The Office, just cause they make me laugh, and occasionally I'll watch Family Guy, Futurama, or Spongebob. I do enjoy nature shows, however. That's about it. I like it. :]
I find the www sufficient for my needs. Good to see there are many here who also don't watch the box :2thumbsup:
I don't watch too much TV, I basicly listen to music the whole day when I'm not in school and whatever. Half the stuff on TV is bullshit anyways.
The Princess loves to watch balet, ice dancing and such and controls the clicker. I'm a fan of Jersey Shore which leads to fights cause The Princess views the show as tacky. Princess wants to purchase a flat screen. I want to stay with the 25yr old box. Dont want anything to draw me in deeper like a Tivio. :elf:
I only watch TV when I'm at my mother's house. I don't have cable. I'll watch movies with my boyfriend, but I'd rather read a book or write
I havent turned on a t.v. in over 2 years. i would rather live life then knowingly stupify myself. though i will join someone in a good movie once in a while
I do not watch as much tv as I used to, and when I do, it's usually older shows or classic movies. The things that come out these days don't appeal much to me.
