Ugh...at least we live in a time where c/s are an option. My grandmother lost three babies all homebirthed! I am grateful that I have my 3 beautiful children...if I didn't have my first via c/s, I believe he would have died....and possibly me too! No regrets...3 sections!

i didnt have a c-section, but i know that a lot of premature/emergency situations require a c-section and perhaps that has something to do with the higher death rates after birth, and not necessarily because people elect to have them just because? just a thought.

I think they need to do a bit more study. Yes, I do think C-sections are necessary sometimes. But I was a momma they were forcing a section on, for a million tiny reasons. I didn't let them do it, and I delivered a beautiful girl without it. How many women fold, have the section, and something goes wrong? or develops wrong later? One momma I know talks about her back hurting right where she had her epidural before her section. It's been like 10 years!

I want to know, barring the true life-and-death emergencies (prolapsed cord, placenta previa, ruptured uterus, etc), what these rates would be.

funny you mentioned back pain, i just talked to a girlfriend that had a section 9 years ago, and she is suffering from spinal cartilage loss between 2 vertebrae. Not r/t the epidural, but because of loss of muscle strength from the section on the abdominal muscles. She could never get that muscle tone back, and thus started to spiral into back strength issues and now the degeneration of the cartilage...

yeah once one gets that epidural.... watch out, it's a slippery slope! in more ways than one can imagine.

there used to be an alternative for those that just could not cope with the pain of transition and wanted something...

remember the pudendal nerve block? my sister had one with her last one.

i'm not trying to take a position in support of c-sections.. i would avoid one at all costs absolutely.. but many women who give birth naturally get epidurals too...

Due to a car accident while my wife was pregnant with our first child, her uterus was ruptured and she had an emergency C-section to save the life of our son. Unfortunately, once you have one section....
Anyhow, even with the weakened uterus walls and the high risk pregnancies, we were blessed with three beautiful children, all of whom are happy, healthy and intelligent

And in cases like yours, HippyLandScaper, I'm forever grateful that we have medical options. Your children are beautiful. :)
