Am I a hippy

not sure what a hippy is really, i mean what defines a hippy? is someone a hippy just because they say they are or is there like a specific order to being a hippy? Am i a hippy if I grow Salvia Divinorum? I have 3 plants .. well four but one of them is as small as a dime (was kind of an experiment to see if the little fella would live) I've never had sex, and I guess all hippies have had sex right? well I might be wrong, I analyze things a lot and ponder the universe, my own conscious awareness and wonder how I know that I am real sometimes.

can anyone explain to me what a hippy is?

are you sure, wouldn't it be Hippy speaking of one, Hippies speaking of many? This is English logic is it not?
for someone who wants to spread love and peace you sure like to make others feel stupid and bad about them self.

eh it is the same everywhere i go, i get ganged up on and argued with. even on forums where people are supposedly kind this is all i get, i will unsubscribe if possible or whatever. i am just always an outcast no matter what I do

As someone who really hates labels of any kind, I've learned to just say "I am" when asked that question. However, I identify most with the hippie philosophy of One Love, practicing peace without violence, and the only way you're an outcast with them is to cast your own self out. I'll take on the hippie label to be with people of like mind. Hippies don't look at you weird because you dress funny or are not a Britney Spears look-a-like. They're not caught up in the mainstream materialistic crap that's dragging the world down.

It doesn't matter what you grow, smoke or eat. It doesn't matter what you wear or how you wear your hair. Or how you spell it. (Though, BlackTar is correct in her spelling) What matters is: Are you willing to share the love? Because that's what we are.

Good post. It is way too common for people to make generalizations about hippies. Although a lot of people who could be considered hippies do drugs or have a lot of sex, that does not mean that they all do. A lot of people who care nothing for peace, love and harmony do those, but they arent hippies. Its just that the counter-cultural movement in the 60s had a lot of similarities because those things contributed to their ideals. Psychedelic drugs are a way to help break down psychological behaviors and beliefs that have been heavily conditioned by mainstream society, having sex is a great way to express your love for someone, and wearing colorful hand-made clothing is a way to respect the environment and appeal to peoples aesthetic values making them feel good. But a hippie doesnt really need to do any of that as long as they believe in peace, love, harmony, freedom, etc and practice it.

Not not in the least. The general hippie culture tends to like jam bands because every cultural movement has a soundtrack and in the 60s bands like The Grateful Dead and Crosby Stills Nash and Young made music that was completely tailored to the movement. Jam bands are groovy and funky and usually somewhat psychedelic, it's a perfect match. A lot of jam bands tend to have hippy-ish lyrics because they're hippies to a certain degree themselves. So speaking culturally there seems to be trends, but that's not what makes someone a hippie. Hippies tend to be very open to new experience and a lot of of hippies like metal or techno or anything good as long as it makes them feel good. I would say that being a hippie is firstly an ideological thing and secondly a cultural thing. The extent to which it's a cultural thing is pretty optional but it tends to be hard to practice peace, love and harmony if there's nobody to love or be peaceful and harmonious with so hippies end up becoming part of a scene or culture to some degree, and scenes and cultures tend to be based around music.
