First of all, I do not mean to insult anyone who is into PCP... but I guess I'm a prude because PCP is nothing I have ever had an interest in. I'm a really sick woman.. I have epilepsy, lupus, etc.. I smoke weed and I'm into pain pills because well, I'm always in an ungodly large amount of pain.. I'm on dilaudid at the moment and it works okay I guess. Anyway.. I was in the hospital last night for a seizure and the doctor wanted to try phenobarbital. Before he would give me this he decided to do a drug test.. Well... PCP SHOWED UP!!!! I was like WTH? I was really freaked out. More then anything (not to offend anyone) I was offended. It's just not something I would do. For someone as ill as I am doing something like PCP would be pretty damn reckless. Why the hell would I do something that could CAUSE a seizure when I already have them? Anyway... I looked it up online and apparently a lot of medications can cause a false positive for PCP? I am on Effexor and I think it is one of them? Has ANYONE ever heard of this? I'm still pretty upset about this. I had to leave the hospital without getting ANY treatment and I ended up having another seizure when I got home. I talked to my regular doctor today and he can't see me till Monday (my seizures are REALLY out of control lately) and he says if I have another seizure that lasts longer then a minute I have to go back to the ER... BUT I mean what's gonna happen? They're gonna call me a druggie again. I really don't know what I am supposed to do... I don't see my regular doctor till Monday. I have the dilaudid to help with the pain I am in after the seizures and I do have some valium to help stop the seizures but the valium hasn't been working lately.. BTW, this was a pee test. I wish they'd have tested my blood so they could see the levels wouldn't be there... SO frustrating!!!!
FALSE POSITIVES # Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives In Urine Tests: venlafaxine (Effexor); dextromethorphan; ketamine THats from erowid- http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/pcp/pcp_testing.shtml PCP seems quite interesting from what it seems, as I enjoyed ketamine quite a bit. As long as I dont rip someones eye out lol (no offense to that poor kid)
Oh I have a script for it. I've been on it for quite awhile. Thanks for that erowid link.. I don't know why I didn't look there myself. Silly me.
I guess I should point out, I have scripts for every medication I mentioned, other then the weed I smoke, which did show up in the test, but they wouldn't worry about that because it doesn't cause seizures. It was the PCP the doctor was all freaked out about.
that's a bitch...i didn't realize that effexor caused a false positive for sherm. [this is where some of you notice that my name IS INFACT a sarcastic PCP reference...]
Well, this sure is proving to be quite the educational experience.. haha. I've always prided myself on my knowledge of most substances but when it comes to PCP I don't know a thing... Guess it's time to start learning.
They should be completely knowledgeable of what drugs you are prescribed when you are taking a drug test. It doesn't make sense that they would freak out for a positive PCP hit, assuming that they knew you were on a drug that causes positive PCP results in a drug test. And if they didn't know, their first question should have been "What drugs are you prescribed?" I feel like this story is missing something.
Well of course the hospital knew what medication I was on.. Thats one of the first things they go over. I wasn't able to talk because I was too out of it from the seizures, but they spoke with my Mom. The problem here was, the doctor and the hospital staff was unaware that effexor could cause a false positive. Actually, the doctor mentioned that it could be my Topamax (what I take for seizures) that made it show up.. he obviously had no idea. Nor did he seem to really care.
In that case, I'd simply recommend avoiding that doctor in the future if at all possible. I would not want a man with a mediocre understanding of basic drugs and their potentialities combined with a lack of interest to be in charge of my health and well-being.
That is horribly poor form from the doctors... Even in the case that an illegal drug did cause a seizure i dont see why they would be so heartless to turn you away. I hope you have better luck with medical care in the futuire
Dextromethorphan is an otc cough supressant that acts as a dissociative in high doses. Have u taken any cough and cold preparations recently? If one of the previous posters was right that it does indeed cause a false positive for pcp and you've taken any number of those otc products (hundreds contain dxm in some amount), that could be the problem. Just a thought though.
the only thing that might make some sense to me is: u said u some weed right? maybe it was laced with pcp or aka "wet" and there wasnt enough pcp for u to notice i guess.. just enough to show up i feel very sorry for u, sad to hear
