Anybody ever go camping in death valley, specificly mohogany flats,Iam going at the end of the week and was wondering how it is,cant seem to find much in the way of photos though.Ive been in deserts before, but never really camped.
I've spent a couple of weeks in Death Valley. I haven't stayed at Mahogany Flats, but did go the the charcoal kilns, which are nearby. That area isn't really desert, as it is forested and in the Panamint mountains which border the actual valley. Also, I think you need a high clearance or 4-wheel drive to get to Mahogany Flats, the road is paved up to Wildrose, then graded dirt up to the kilns, beyond that the road looked a bit dodgy, but I didn't attempt to drive it with my vehicle. Its still probably hot down in the valley but if you want a more of a desert experience, that's the place to go, lot's of amazing places down there.
Thanks for the info. ,Im staying at mohogany flats for a few days at least to climb Telescopic peak, plan on spending the night on top to do some stargazing. But I definitly want to check out the valley, any thing you think is a must see. After the climb I will still have a few days to explore.
Some of the most well known places can be driven to or through, like Badwater, Devil's Golf Course, Zabriskie Point, the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells, and the Artists Drive. For such a large area there are relatively few trails, you just kinda gotta go cross-country and explore but as for established hiking trails, Mosiac Canyon, Dante's View, and Golden Canyon are worth checking out.
