Down vest. I work outside all day during the winter and this keeps my core warm, but still allows me to move my arms.
im all for layers, i used to wear tights under my long summer skirts, but now i have temperature control problems. i overheat way too fast, even a single layer of fleece makes me sweat. so currently, i wear a tank top with a long sleeved button up shirt, i have a jersey knit striped one im partial to, and a jacket over that, usually hoodie type. but i wear jeans most of the time now, and i no longer own any tights. but colorado weather is strange that way. its not the cold thats worst IMO, its the wind. it cuts through all the layers like knives against your skin. i like the soft snow that comes with no wind, the kind thats hushed in the morning. i am not a fan of dry bitter snow, cant even be packed into a snowball.
i think everyone has said this but LAYERS! i live in the white mts and thats what gets me through the cold ass winters. i wear skirts still, but i wear hot chillys underneaths, actually under my pants as well on some cold daze and nights. i wear about 2 or 3 long sleeves under a sweater or hoodie plus a winter jacket. invest in a jacket. and scarves, start making scarves right now. mittens... smartwool socks are just about the best thing ever. hmmm... im starting my own winter accessory line and i'll send over some fleece mittens. good luck! ilovermont. i used to live in the NEK where are you?
Sweaters, Jeans, Jackets, hats (wool hats), and a good pair of winter boots (to keep those toes from falling off).
In winter and other random rainy fall days I tend to wear a knit hat, lots of scarves, a warm coat/poncho, a sweater or long sleeve top, bell bottoms or a floor-length skirt, and moccasin boots. Matter of fact, it can get a little too warm...
I lived in VT for the first 31 years of life. Here is the list of things I suggest. Sorry if there are repeats from other posters, I did not read them all. 1. water proof boots or shoes with good grip (in the spring they have what is called mud season, I liked rubber rain boots for that time of year) 2. a snuggly warm coat and a medium weight coat 3. mittens 4. socks, I wear skirts and knee socks are great under them 5. If you are a female like me who likes long skirts a fannel petticoat skirt is awesome 6. hoodies, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and sweaters 7. a scarf It is all about layers and staying dry! The weather is very unpredictable up there year around. Honestly in every season, layers are wise. Best wishes to you! Vermont is a wonderful place to live but it is expensive!
Make sure one of the layers on your top half is tucked into a layer on your bottom half, so you don't have any chilly air gaps. Exercise to keep your circulation up.
In personal experience, you can survive outside in most weather if you focus on the following: 1. Silk or polypropylene thermals 2. A long, windproof, waterproof, breathable jacket 3. Woolen socks, mittens, hats, scarves etc. 4. Waterproof boots Everything else you can just kind of mix and match as long as you wear enough layers. Jeans are okay even. Like the poster above said, try to tuck clothes in. Discount camping stores will have a lot of the things you need and they'll be really suited to their purpose unlike some fashionable clothes. This is for the purpose of functionality but if you care about looking cool then I would get my advice from somebody else.
Aside from everyone else's great suggestions, get yourself a couple pairs of thermal long-johns. It'll make a world of difference on those cold, cold days. I also loooooove really high socks to wear under clothes becasue long-johns are a bit bulky, thigh-high length socks own on cold days.
