There should be a separate category for this, as we could discuss so many commercials. Either the stupidity of them or the creativity of them, what you like, what you dont like, the amount of them now as compared to the amount of them say 30 years ago, etc etc.

Let me try and cover a few of these topics.

First of all, ever notice how a show that is 30 years old, such as MASH, has had so much cut out of it? It was 30 minutes long originally, 26 minutes of show and 4 minutes of commercials, but nowadays they have had to cut out a good 7 or 8 minutes of the show so that they can add that much in commercials and still keep it at 30 minutes. If they air uncut versions, the shows run 45 minutes with all the commercials.

Ok, how about commercials that annoy you? I hate the commercials that feature Vince, the pitchman for shamwow and the chopper. Main reason I hate this pitchman, is because whatever he is selling, he always says you have to call within the next 20 minutes, because we cant do this all day, and yet the commercials run all day. This is a dishonest selling ploy that makes me not trust the product they are selling.

Commercials I love? Billy Mays. RIP Billy. I always said this man could sell screendoors to a submarine manufacturer, that is how good he is. I may not like some of the products he promotes, but I love the man and his enthusiam.

I could go on and on about so many commercials, but I will stop here and see what others have to say on this topic.

In the US they 'used' to regulate how many commercials could be shown. They also regulated who could advertise(for example prescription drug ads were banned etc.).Since they lifted those regulations they literally show 3-4 times the amount of commercials. It's UNacceptable and one reason I no longer view mainstream tv anymore.--If a program or movie is not on something like TCM,or Retro etc.(uncut, non commercial stations) I do not view it.----Mainstream US tv 'these days' seems to go by this way of doing business--all our viewers are a bunch of idiots,so we'll just make terrible tv shows and show them in between commericals.---BTW,many Americans still do not know this, but in many other countries television is commercial free--NO commercials shown.

It’s a vicious circle. The average American gets something like 1,000 ads a day thrown at them. So the only way they can make you remember their product is to advertise it many many times during the day.

My personal least favorite is those free credit report commercials. The songs are SO annoying. But they did their job, I remember it don’t I, even if I hate it.

^^^^I disagree.By showing SO many ads it's impossible to remember most things advertised. It all gets lost in the shuffle.---I actually still remember commercials I saw in the 1970s and 80s for 2 reasons, alot of the adverts were clever and cute back then, plus of course they showed a fraction of the ads they show now.The old ads got your attention in a nice way,and often made people interested in the product.---Less is MORE.----Nowadays the new ads, just make people switch the channel or just turn people off, that is if they view the ads at all.

I wonder how much money the companies are wasting on those horrendous advertisements.I certainly am not the only one who does not view that junk anymore. Many people no longer view that rubbish.Bring back what used to work so well--regulation on advertising.

I have to admit that I have got to the point where I just take the chronic piss out of ads now. They are, for the most part, puerile rubbish and mind numbing nonsense so I just change the words or whatever and make them funny.

well i don't know about that now. i was just watching a television commercial about a place to get sandwiches and other lunch items.someone apparently wins a contest at the diner and they start throwing drinks and food around in their excitement of being declared the winner....in another one a giant transformer comes by a restaurant and smashes the walls of the restaurant in....if it wasn't for t.v. commercials i wouldn't know there were such exciteing places to go dine....another thing i think about is how many commercials for places like mcdonalds and burger king run.i always feel happy being reminded that their establishments are still there.i didn't know thanks for the updates on their specials of the week.

I've actually hurt myself leaping for the mute button when those free credit report commercials come on and would happily pay at least two weeks salary to watch the performers being water-boarded.

As long as I could tape it and watch it over and over.

That misses the point. It doesn't matter what you remember ... what matters is if you went out and bought their product.

Personally, I don't care how "creative" a commercial is. I resent their attempts to manipulate me. I don't watch commercial television anymore at all. I like to watch episodes of the great old programs on YouTube ... but has anyone else noticed how there are more and more ads there also? I suppose the day is coming when YouTube will have commercials just like television does.

And it's a pisser to go to a theater and have to sit thru dumb --ass commercials before the movie. This really bothers me.Some of you may remember when you had to get up and cross the room to change the channel on your TV.I just have rabbit ears on my boob tube,so I don't watch too much ,but I'm really thankfull for a remote.

I can't stand the amount and frequency of commercials in this country. It stops me from watching TV. They regulate them in the UK and living there I'd always notice when the screen dimmed a little during an American program for a commercial and then came straight back on. I won't get started on the superior quality of television over there, that's another matter. But almost every commercial I see either insults my intelligence or makes me want to puke. Occasionally I see a clever one.

As for movies, my boyfriend and I decided to time the commercials leading up to the actual feature presentation and clocked 40 minutes. I hope people protested as much as we did because we'd noticed a sudden increase where there was only two or three car or cola commercials before there was then all the same commercials we had to sit through at home. This was in the UK as well.

Considering quality,I don't know how these ad agencies sell such moronic ideas to companies :a person with a styrofoam head representing what? The only commercials that ever had any entertainment value to me were the "got milk" commercials.---------Do they not have commercials in the UK?

Oh, they do, save for the BBC and movie channels (well, in between movies) but there's far less of them. I will say, though, that being back in the States I think commercial breaks are shorter in this country. I'd still rather it was like the UK: one popcorn/bathroom break per half hour. And they warn you when it's back on as well. Just a small courtesy and opportunity for them to advertise their own channel! :D
