I gave up red meat a couple years ago and had chicken or fish 4 or 5 times a week. Occasionally I'd get a funky body vibe after the eating the meat. I came to the understanding that to some degree I was consuming the same emotions that the creature had had his whole life, and if that particular animal was constantly fearful or distressed, that same chemisty was locked into its flesh that I ate. A week or so ago my wife and I decided we'd make a go for lacto-ovo vegetarianism, and to finish off the meat we had in the house. Tonight we grilled up some turkey breast and it really did not sit right. That same funk was there again but much more intense, like my head was a tv that had no channels just a snow screen. I wanted to puke, my body was quivering a little, my face lost its color. I decided to tell my body to take this flesh one last time and that was it. I managed to keep it down but now the ugly feeling remains a little. My veg friend said when he ate meat recently it gave him a "staticy headache," which was amusing to me because that was the exact feeling I'd had that I couldn't explain. So anyway I got hella produce and canned beans and lentils. I guess I'll see if the neighbors want our frozen meat since I assume it's best if the creature's flesh doesn't go to waste. But then again it still seems like a waste if it's eaten.
we shall prevail. :beatdeadhorse5:<-- I hear that food animals are treated like this and worse. Is that only sometimes true or mostly/all true?
update: I haven't missed meat at all. The only meat I've had since posting was some salmon my buddy caught in Alaska while we camped. It was a bit hard on my gut but I kept it down. I've mostly substituted meat with beans, black and garbonzo mainly. I've had more energy, especially sexual energy. I'm a horny bastard. And forgive my candor but my BM's have been much better. I've had a lot of mental mayhem recently just from life circumstances so it's hard to judge the cognitive effects, but I feel like I'm better able to rebound from low moods and fatigue, and I can meditate easier. My skin and fingernails might look better too, but I can't say for sure. anyway, really glad I made the decision. Beans cost about 1/8th what meat does. I'm still learning about all the new alternatives but it's fun and I just feel better:cheers2:
Good for you! Very awesome. I'm happy to hear you are seeing such positive results. I used to want to give up meat so badly but I never went ahead and did it.. I have always been an animal lover and deeply bothered by the thought of eating well.. "flesh." It makes me sick to think about. Anyway, I ended up finding out I was really ill, and got a diagnoses that could be helped by changing my diet.. and that kicked my butt into finally just quitting eating meat all together. I have felt a ton of changes like you mentioned.. I have more energy, even my friends have noticed it and stuff. I feel pretty great, I'm so glad you do too!
I gave up meat about a year ago. But instead of easing into it like a normal person by going lacto-ovo vegetarian I decided to jump into a 100% raw fruits and vegetable diet. The drastic change definetly helped me in my shift from meat. I don't miss meat in the slightest bit. As I shifted to a more plant based, wholesome diet, I could actually FEEL my body telling me that this was good - and I could feel the joy of my individual cells as I would knock down fruit after fruit. I really grew to understand the inherent nature and relationship between me and my food. I highly recommend that you stick with it. Also, as a side note, if anyone is interested in lucid dreaming, improving dream recall, or simply just cutting down on required hours of sleep, vegetarianism helps improve your succsess with all of the above. And yes, the meat industry does do horrible horrible things to domesticated animals.
thanks BDF and DC. I've been thinking of ditching the lacto ovo too. Is soy or rice milk a good replacement? Often when I'm trying to sleep but can't because my stomach is asking for food I swig some skim milk and it really knocks me out I assume because of the tryptophan. I don't know if i'd get the same effect from soy or rice milk. Interesting you bring up dreaming because my dreams have been amazing. I thought it may have been the fact that I basically quit smoking herb, but I've had those dreams before and they can be intense, but the dreams I've been having have been like heaven in my head and I wake up in a nicer mood from it.
Taste-wise, in cereals and smoothies, i prefer rice milk. It's very very sweet though. I couldn't drink large quantities of it alone though - rather rich. Soy milk is more similar to regular milk but I personally don't enjoy the taste as much. Personally, when I'm looking to sleep but my stomach's a rumblin, I like to chomp on some fresh almonds - light, satisfying and tasty. But regrettably I don't get to eat like that any more, much too expensive now that I'm on my own dollar. You also could swig some mugwort or calea z tea if you've got the taste buds for it. Both contain chemicals good for sleep and dreaming.
Way to go! I dont know if anyone around you carries it or not, but I have found LifeLight Smart Deli soy turkey slices that are very good(quick and easy). Im sure you will find that the longer you go the better you feel.
Honestly, you should be careful about having a strictly veggy diet. IF you do not eat sufficent amounts of fruits and vegetables raw, it can actually be damaging more than eating meat. I would also highly suggest sprouting the lentils and eating more greens and nuts. Also, stay away from grains with a glutonous protein. You will feel a billion times better and it is multiple times as healthy. In fact, from my research many studies showed that eating veggies raw, is way healthier than eating them cooked. Some studies suggested that eating vegg cooked can actually cause the vitamins in the food to turn carcinogenic. If you really are looking to change your health, look into starting off with master cleanse and head into a raw food diet. PEace
^^^-its true a raw diet of veggies AND fruits accompanied with nuts is the best way to go. MMM-I just thought about blueberries-haha
yeah most of my veggies are raw. my typical thing is homemade hummus with black beans piled high with various raw vegs wrapped in a wheat tortilla. i dunno whether the tortillas are the type you described but if they are i can just leave them out. i tried oat milk flavored with vanilla and i hated it. way too sweet and my body reacted weird to it. i might just grind up oats and add water and use that as milk. thanks for the help everyone
no prob. Welcome to the first step towards excellent health and mentl clarity. Yes, you will benefit largely from cutting out any grains and dairy(unless you eat raw dairy, which is very expensive and difficult to find) I would definitely begin with a master cleanse, in order to get your body off of unhealthy flavours and foods. The results are amazing and you crave raw food after it, like never before.
thanks Snoc, doin great. I don't miss meat in the slightest, it was like an unnecessary burden. It's nice to not have to buy and cook it and worry about unsanitary meat. My digestion is transformed. my sex drive is off the charts, it's kinda ridiculous. sometimes I'll get a whiff of someone bbq'ing but thinking about eating the meat is unpleasant. I still have a lil cheese, but I switched to soy milk. I think once I get better with alternative veg food and cooking I can eliminate the cheese.
Congrats on going vegetarian. I was veg for 2 and a half years (vegan for a lot of it) and it's great being a vegetarian. Best of luck to you.
Also, if you are really tempted to eat something and it feels to bad to deny it, this is a neat trick that works stupendously. Basically, you take a mothfull of whatever you eat, and treat it like a peice of gum(something intended to be enjoyed for its falvour, not its health consequences) then just spit it out. I have done that many times, with cookies, fried goods, wheat products. Note: Make sure that while it is in your mouth, you take deep breaths, in and out. This will give you a way to taste the flavour your craved over and over again, without going for another bite of the food that is tasty but ridicusliu for the health..All flavour no health consequences...its ingenius.
