I was at the park the yesterday with jerry (a tree that provides shade and back support :)) and after... some amount of time, I'm not sure exactly how long it was because I wasn't paying attention to the time, my body would start swaying left to right or my head would bob forward and backwards/up and down, which ever you prefer to call it. Of course, with me being as easily amused as I am, I would start giggling or smiling because of this and it would sort of interrupt me... not in a bad way, I just thought it was peculiar.

It was the first time it's happened and it also happened when I was meditating at home later that night and even today at the bookstore while I was reading but it wasn't as... much and it was only my head a little.

So can anyone clue me in as to what was going on here?

You are experiencing the movement of the energy referred to as Kundalini. Just be still just focus on the slow gentle breath and just observe the energy At certain periods of you meditation journey you can become aware of the energy manifesting in different ways. Take note of any behavioral changes as when the energy is more dominant in a certain area it will effect you in either a positive or negative manner.
I did some work with a Kundalini mantra and my partner who was meditating in another room felt her body moving as mine was!
    Hope this is of use.

I have experienced this from time to time as well, it usually comes on when I am stoned, and also when I have been paying particular attention to my diet and sexual practises, ie. abstaining completely from it.

I also experience a glowing sensation in my frontal lobe, which is assume my third eye.

I have always noticed through my life, when I bring objects in close proximity to the bridge of my nose it start to 'glow', or I suppose you could describe it as a pleasant ache. It seems to be stronger when I hold metal objects close to it, I think this is also related.

I have had reiki done on me a few times, and when they start they always get you to remove all metal objects from your pockets and stuff, I think it is because metal, being a conductor, attracts energy away from you, the reiki energy that you harness by opening your channels, or chakras.

This kind of thing has not happened to me for a while though, because of my current situation I am not getting a proper sleep cycle, and haven't for about 2 years now.

Actually I get worried that I will lose this ability to meditate in this way because of the stresses of life. I know that chakras can become damaged irreparably, and I am just over the hill of the evolution of my life, things from here on now start to age unless you are very careful to look after yourself.

Hey, that's pretty coool... it has still been happening, and today it occasionally felt like waves were going down my lower back and exiting my... waist area? in the back about an inch from the floor and this feeling of like.. I dunno, it was my body expanding or something expanding around it and contracting (around) it in sync with my breath. it was sort of like a gentle massage. This has happened to me before, but it was a couple of years ago when I was reeeaally stoned and it was only in my head (I mean that as in that's where I felt it on/in my body)

I also felt something really rapidly spinning in my chest. I'm guessing this was like my heart chakra or something? I'd always wondered if you could actually feel them and I guess it was a lot faster than I'd thought it would be. This was all after doing some chakra clearing exercise (never done one before so I figured what the hey) and I dunno if that really had anything to do with it

How could the energy manifest itself in a negative manner and what could I do to keep that from happening? Are there any sites or books you'd recommend checking out to learn further about all this or if there's anything else you could tell me about then feel free to; I'm eager to read

McLeod, I've had that sort of thing happen to me as well, ever since I was a kid, except I didn't do it around the bridge of my nose it was more at my forehead. I'd point a pencil or something at it and bring it close and closer to my skin and I'd just get that feeling there. It always puzzled me as a kid.

and I've never heard of chakras being irreparably damaged but eh... I hope everything works out for you, bud

All experiences are objects of your attention. In meditation, the effort is to move your attention from the object to the subject. Simply ask, "Who is experiencing this?"
Or cultivate the Witnessing Mind - separate yourself from all experiences and look at them, with the awareness that you are not in the experience, the experience is in you. You are the Consciousness, the Witness that is illuminating all this.

I had some uncontrollable body movements the other day. It felt as if i was going into one of my siezures. Thing was though i never got to that stage but my heart was beating really hard. Not too fast but hard. And at the same time my legs were shaking bad. As were my arms to the extent it was Very hard to hold a cup for something to drink. It kind of felt like a panic attack but siezure at the same time.

All i could do was convince myself all it was was a panic attack and after two hours of the situation and some libriums i was all better.

Never heard of heart disease then?

(I'm not saying I have this BTW, but the heart IS a chakra and it does 'get broken')

    Hi,

This happens to me from time to time during meditation and sometimes outside it, things like head going from side to side and up and down, and then starting to roll around in one direction and then the other.. If what is causing it is energy going through the body (probably kundalini as beyondtheastral said), then this can be called "automatic yoga", as the energy moves around the body it "needs" to flow smoothly so the body sometimes does these movements (without the intention of the person), which make the energy flow more smoothly..

Here is a link to a site called AYP site- it has lessons about meditation and yoga, and a couple of the lessons are about "automatic yoga"- here is one:

All the best and enjoy :)

The chakra is different from the organ.

I was under the impression that they were just different ways of looking at the same thing.

The heart is both a muscle for pumping blood through the body AND a seat of energy, or a channel for harnessing energy, or a wotsit.

I don't fully understand what chakras are though. I'm not a guru.

I have heard though that people who have undergone a lot of emotional turmoil in their lives are more likely to develop heart disease, so the old adage of a broken heart might be more than just a saying.

If the old ticker ain't pumping the blood round your veins, then maybe it also doesn't have the capacity to harness the so called 'life energy', and vice versa.

The chakra, the energy is situated in the center of the chest, where we point to our heart usually. The pumping organ is off to the left. Of course, the health of each affects the other.

In regard to the heart, heart chakra ect. The main chakra people talk about in this regard is what is commonly known as Anahata, and is also related to different forms of sound manifestation so if you also start to hear a buzzing sound, or thunderous or waterfall sounds, it is probably (not definitely) due to a focus of prana in this area. However, there are many different charkas in the same area, if you start with the one in the very center of the chest, it is surrounded by one in front and back and one on each side, in fact the one on the right is sometimes given greater significance than the center or left side, by Ramana Maharshi for one, where your spiritual as opposed to physical heart is. I've of this in the teachings of a Buddhist and Sufism group as well.

As I understand it, the whole body is composed of so many different channels and chakras a lifetime of constant work may not be enough to open them all. Plus, each chakra has it's own inner workings, which are connected to many other chakras and the whole body is a chakra, in practice with a teacher/lineage or a group they start to interact just as the different ones in your body do. Similarly the earth, sun, solar system, galaxy, so on and so forth, it's really beautiful.

It seems like a lot of people are talking about spontaneous body movements, I'll link to one resource I've wrote about before which I feel is indespensible on this topic:
    http://www.shakingmedicine.com/presentations/video.php
My personally understanding on this is that one should just let it go, let it take you away, cry, moan, scream, let your body contort in any way it wants or flow smoothly and freely like a spontaneous taiji form, or not move at all. In this way your body will send energy where it needs it, clear out things that need to be cleaned and do so in relative harmony with your environment, as this process continues the cleaning, nourishing and awareness will get increasingly subtler.

I like to sum it up in the following "truism": From stillness comes movement.
Following those movements helps you to learn how to listen to that deep inspiration and intuition which emerges from the place of stillness. By the way, truisms are never true. They sure can be helpful, though, until they get in the way.

I experienced this the other day. I was out in the country enjoying a few beers and smoking some hash, and I felt the vibrations flowing through me, caused me to gently move back and forward.

I stopped for a while but started again recently. It still happens every other session or so and got pretty intense last time.

I've had some negative emotional experiences that I've attributed to meditation and kundalini experiences. Depends on how you look at it, it was a positive, life changing process in the long term but difficult to walk through. Buried, negative emotions can come to the surface and they have to be felt, suppressed memories can come up, a way of letting go, a kind of cleansing. This period lasted for about a year and I had a lot of anger issues for that time period, prior to that I rarely expressed anger. Today, many years later, I rarely get angry and I don't believe I suppress it. Everyone is different though and I've known people who seem to have had no negative experiences from a kundalini awakening.

I've come across some stuff online that could make a person very fearful, suggesting that there could be permanent psychological damage if a person is unprepared. I don't think there's much evidence of this, it all seems to point back to one case and the guy could have had some serious issues unrelated to a kundalini experience, at least that's one theory I came across. I believe we're only given what we can handle and what we need on a spiritual journey, it's not always pleasant but it is always beneficial, not everyone approaches meditation with a belief in a universal consciousness though, so that perspective might not work.

In Hinduism and Buddhism it's highly recommended to seek a teacher or guru as a guide through intense spiritual experiences, unfortunately in this culture, it's very difficult to find one.

As far as involuntary body movements, I've had some bizarre experiences, a lot of shaking, involuntary yoga postures, changes in consciousness similar to a mushroom trip. From everything I could find on the subject I've come to the conclusion that it's simply part of the process of evolving and there's really nothing to make sense of beyond having an understanding of Eastern thought and an understanding of our true nature and the ego. I've found that reading up on different beliefs about the chakras can be helpful and I'm exploring cranial sacral therapy.

There is some interesting stuff on this website on kundalini:
