I'm from Canada. Um... not sure why I asked... more to satisfy HDH's curiousity since she said you looked familiar. More just curious I guess. It should say beside just under my username where I'm from. BUt I have to change it as I just made a cross country road trip and am now in Ontario.

As for the shampoos to use. There are a few that are residue free and there is typically not a consensus as to what is the best. I used the Knotty Boy bar when I started my dreads and I personally didn't like it. It left almost a film on my hair... :S Some people use Dr. Bronners and like it. You can order it from eBay, online stores and often Natural food stores will carry it as well.

I'm living in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Its a cool little town, I haven't lived here long, just moved back into a town after living in the countryside for 3 years.

Thats ok, I just asked as I thought 'wtf, does everyone think I look familiar or something!' lol It does indeed say by your username where you are from, sorry I hadn't noticed that. I will order some Dr. Bronners.. I hope I like it too..

HHmmmm, well if twist and rip fell out, what did you do the next time and did that fall out?

I backcombed and that fell out too! Took a month or so to right its self. All in all it took about 6 months for my hair to look like dreads but I think the bleach job I did really helped.

Could try getting a wool hat and just rubbing it around on your head then rip the knotty clumps apart.. I think that works sometimes.

    Bleach job? What is this?

Thanks, I don't own a wolly hat though.. I will bear it in mind though and if a few people come forward saying they used this method and it worked then I might go out and buy a wolly hat!

I recommend a chemical dread perm, they only cost $700 and you will have instant locks

Nah seriously though i think you should either twist and rip or backcomb if you want to start dreading now, your hair is long enough, just be prepared to be left with short stumpy dreads like i had when i first backcombed

Don't suppose you have a before and after picture of the length your hair was and the stumpy dreads that you had after backcombing?

    Just after the backcomb

This was last month, so you can see how much length i lost, not that you can really tell from the freshly backcombed pic, but it was over a quarter

Holy fuck I thought that was me for a second. My hair looked like that a couple weeks ago. My locks got thicker though which is fucking awesome. I don't think I'll let them get any thicker though.

Op: Your hair is all wavy and stuff which is ideal for the natural route. Since your hair is short you could just wash every couple of days with a res free shampoo and not run your fingers through it ever. The natural route takes years though...so I guess if you wanted quicker results you could backcomb. You might have to experiment with all methods...natural, backcomb, and T&R to find one that works best for your hair type. My hair was to my shoulders when I started...and my dreads are an ongoing experimentation. lol. I used back comb on some, T&R on some, and natural/neglect on the others. lol. My dreads are a year old and the natural ones are just now starting to form. The backcombed and T&R ones are crazy and loopy and keep shrinking! Personally I like the neglect ones the best because theyre the only ones with length atm.
