You go right ahead and argue for your disorder. You willingly CHOOSE this life you want me to believe is so horrible. You, sir, are the one who is ignorant. Ignorant of the liberating feeling of your own strength as a human. Ignorant of the marvels of your brain and its perception of reality. Ignorant of what its meant to be alive. To those of you not so far gone to see that there is truth in what I say. Do not let people like this Dave guy convince you of your own disorders. He will lead you to the padded cells. Everyone....stop being afraid, we all have to live...face life, take its torments and its blessings, rejoice in the fact that you are alive.
6 years of combat duty and Im not depressed... what I am is, pissed off,, .. thats what keeps me alive and thats what kept me alive on the battlefield.. :hat:... as Stalk used to say.. Change your mind..
Okay, you've made extraordinary claims in this thread. show me data that supports it show me proof that in the 1500's-1590's (I don't know if that's what you meant by ancient, but it's old enough that I'll go for it, I'd even take anything around 1 AD.) suicide rates were lower than they are today.
I believe a lot of our problems stem from the advance of technology, including depression and other similar disorders. The problem today is not depression itself, it is the huge numbers of people who *are* just having a bad day who are diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders and become yet another zombie on meds. I think the worst example is ADHD, I have seen lots of people who genuinely have the condition and it really has quite a negative effect on them without their meds or other treatment (such as smoking cannabis). However, I have also seen so many kids diagnosed with ADHD simply because they misbehave, and I think its this kind of mistake the OP is referring to. Depression is a condition, but it is often exaggerated, we have a lot of control over our mental health and mental well-being, and most mental conditions can be rectified with meditation and perseverance. -Matt
When down in the depths there is only one way to go ! There ARE others worse off than you ! Times of adversity, though frustratring, unfair and cruel are tests of character but also awarness, when you find out who your true friends are. Though when it comes, the burden of depression can seem devestating, though ones best friend is oneself - and the inner strength that we all have, coupled with conviction of conscience, WILL Overcome < Peace + Love ~ Save the Planet > eace:
i didn`t read the whole thing here. but my general impression of our past is that people generally worked too hard to be depressed. & someone who couldn`t work was banished from trhe tribe. i guess if someone were depressed they would keep it to themselves. that, or they went to the shaman, who may or may not have seen it as a "sign" as it were. & maybe some sorta ritual would be performed. & maybe some sorta drug was used. now, keep in mind this wasn`t done on a casual basis like nowadays.
Depression does not make you "special"..it does not refer to a "problem" that you are having....it is as simple as your mind being too weak to percieve reality and accept it. Lets say you were in a life or death survival situation, you got lost in the woods. Would it be your depression that makes you sit on your ass and accept death? NO, it would be your weak mind and character that would induce you to give up hope. Depression is an emotion and I am pretty sure that before doctors got hold of this word it was simply a word to describe a mood such as elation or sorrow. So then EVERYONE gets depressed just as EVERYONE feels elation and sorrow. Then somehow it got turned into a disorder that only some people could get, a disease. Eventually you have half the popultion thinking that the feelings that are commonplace in this here life are a disorder that needs to be cured. Poor weak humans...if only we could see.
We had to learn about this in health oct. lol. People that were depressed "mental" in ancient times were brutally taken care of and eventually killed.
Don't believe everything you learn in health class. Out of curiosity, do you remember which civilization/tribe they taught you did this? If that scientology thing was directed towards me I assure you I am ignorant of thier belief system. I actually keep meaning to read up on it as it seems like an interesting line of thought, might as well read up on every religion a little bit, ya know?
most all ancient peoples would prettymuch have the same rule or code. & it`s prettymuch the same thing i said. & this idea as it is often nowadays may be just an excuse for ducking out of work. in the past work had to be shared by all. maybe there were tribes who banished individuals who were this way. but the problem w/ that sometimes may have been that said tribe may have been "raided" by an individual or individuals who may have found raiding easier than work. in fact banishment may well have been an earlier punishment which changed to death when it was discovered banishment had these side-effects.
People like you make disorders like mine a dirty little secret. They make us suffer in silence, unable to tell those around us and get any understanding and the support we need. You're spreading ignorance simply for the sake of doing so, because you think you're right and clever. You are not. You clearly have very limited knowledge of mental health so I have no idea what you're doing here. Go and argue this with a psychiatrist or any mental health professional and see how far you get You have made no valid or helpful points. You are completely unqualified to discredit mental disorders. This really does seem like typical picking on easy targets. "Aha, you're down and I'm not. Get up and get on with it and be a big man like I am". The problem is, no-one is impressed As a side note, massive advances in mental health care have been made even very recently. In the 50's my grandmother was exhibiting symptoms and was given electric shock treatment before being offered anything else at all and taken away to a mental insitution where she was treated very badly, which damaged her for the rest of her life. Her symptoms were consistant with bipolar disorder. Today she would be helped properly and with the proper care, understanding and caution, which is very obviously the preferable approach
The difference between being a bit sad or having a bad day and clinical depression or a depressive disorder is the longevity and inability to just shift it. I think to most this is common knowledge. Differences in brain activity for a sustained period are the key. Everyone does indeed go through different emotions and brain patterns daily. For some, chronic inbalance and upset is the reality
