if you where able to travel threw time, would you be able to travel back in time and kill your great grandfather before he ever gave birth to his son/daughter? How would that work, since your family would literally be wiped out of time, would you cease to exist? Would it even work?

First. There is no time machine. And probably if it works, you would die right the way. And as in every big vraz yteheory, you only have to test it to find out.

if you did do that in my mind your heart would probably stop at the same moment your great grandfather's does.

Think of it this way, if the universe is infinite, somewhere you did go back in time and kill your great grandfather, yet you still exist here. In going back in time, really you are just entering a reality similar to one that is part of our collective past.

So a time machine would really be an interdimensional portal which could take you into realities which are existing in a manner similar to the past and futures of this timespace. So, if you killed your great grandfather, his descendants couldn't exist in that reality, but you would be fine since your predecessors still exist in another reality. Unfortunately, it may be impossible for you to ever return to the same reality from which you departed, maybe just one which is similar.

Anyone remember the tv show 'Sliders'?

    I don't think you would

just by going back in time, you ahve broken away form it's normal flow

I do not think you would be affected directly by any changes you caused

If something prevented you from being conceived at the moment you were, you'd fade away. Haven't you guys seen Back to the Future?

the whole time loop subject confuses the hell out of me. i mean if you went back in time and killed your great grandfather, you would never exist making it impossible for you to ever actually go back and kill him. whoa.

The grandfather you kill exists in a separate dimension of reality, yo. Not your grandfather because he's either alive or dead in this dimension.

once you reached the point where you altered his life enough so that he doesn't have a son/daughter (or at least your grandfather/grandmother), i think you would just cease to exist, just in that instance.

If you went back in Time...

The Tiniest Thing you Do Could Change the Entire Future...

    Something Even Simplistic...

Hmm...I Know What I mean...Just Not Sure How to Explain it...

But Like Someone ELse Said...Your Grandfather Would Have a Part in the World...And is Connected to a Flow...Pieces in a machine...He Affects the World and Those Around Him...

OK Shutting up...I Have Forgotten the original Question...

I think if you did somehow go back in time and kill your grandfather ... you would imediatley die. I do not knowi f your body would stay in that time, or fade, maybe even return to YOUR time. But you would cease to exit in any living physical form. I actually think you would stay in HIS time. You would just die, without any apparent cause. The whole idea of you living would be pointless, because you were never born ... nobody knows you exit.

    Make sence?

    I'm pretty stoned, sorry. :D

anyone watch the movie Triangle with the bermuda triangle? I watched a bit of it and it kinda tripped me out.

Actually i would think its impossible to do anything that would make you cease to exist. It s tough to explain what im thinking in text. Say you go into the past, that would mean there's a future. Which means before you go back into the past, you already have, and it couldn't have caused you to cease to exist otherwise you wouldn't be able to go back in time in the first place. woh.......

Rene Barjavel first wrote about the "grandfather paradox" in the imprudent traveller. Its one of those things that you can spend all day trying to wrap your head around.
