Howdy everyone, I'm looking for a commune. I'm not decided on going and living on one just yet, but I'd like to visit one perhaps - or go spend a few days, or just talk to those in it - and see if it's for me.

I know about ic.org and am looking slowly through it, but it has hundreds and hundreds to go through - so in the meantime I thought I'd ask all of you out there if you knew of any in the East Coast region. I'm hoping for PA or NJ, but surrounding areas are fine.

I'm also looking more for one that is already established - I'd like to jump in with some folks who know what they're doing as opposed to the alternative.

I'm hoping for one where I can earn my keep via working right there on site (maybe a farm?)...as opposed to just a communal household where I have to basically live the same dumb lifestyle as before.

I'd like it to be a little bigger as opposed to just a handful of people, too. But these are all just some preferences and nothing more.

So does anyone have any experience with anything like this in the area?

Howdy brother Grim! If you haven't already, check out Acorn Community in Mineral, VA at www.acorncommunity.org. I communicated with them a few years back & at that time, they seemed really genuine & committed to what they're doing. Looking at their website, I'm happy to see nothing has changed! :) 72 acres of certified organic land, orchards, community food crops as well as seed exchange & tinnery craft businesses. Acorn is 100% income sharing & consensus based with no identified leader or leadership core group. Basically, this is a true commune. I think I'm at the point where I'm ready to hit them up again myself. The way things currently are in the world, I don't think any of us can afford to wait any longer! Keep in touch if you'd like, brother. Be nice to share some knowledge & compare notes. ~Namaste~
