    Hello brothers.

I have been thinking the last weeks and I had a revelation.
I'm not sure if I'm a real hippie, I'm beginning to think I'm just what media and society knows as a hippie.
I know is more than using drugs and having long hair.

My hippie ideals began last year when people started calling me hippie. I began searching and realized that many "hippie" ideals matched me. Soon I became an stereotyped hippie.

This year I started thinking about it and realized I was being hypocritical... I was just a system puppet.
So my question is.... Where does REAL hippyness comes from? What changes I have to make for getting to be a REAL hippie and not just a superficial hippie?
I know I have many ideals that are considered "hippy", but still I think I'm mostly what society wants me to be: a fake hiipie.

Ha your being silly, I'm no hippy but I ain't stupid so I'll share with you some wisdom I picked up when I was younger.

Be yourself. If your a hippy that's cool if your not that's cool too I mean when everyone was becoming a hippy they were just doing a thang and people started calling them that.

It's like I don't go to a dead show to be a deadhead, I go to see awesome music, dance, hang with some cool people and have a good time because I like all of that. You can call me whatever you want, as my friend puts it, as long as your callin' me ;)

Plus support feeding the hungry and shelter the homeless.
    Support cleaning up the environment.
Support and work for equality of all races, sexes, and economic groups.
Live a simple life, shunning consumerism.
    Live your beliefs.
Express your beliefs, even if it means picking up a sign and joining others in a march.

Do these things make you a hippie? No. It does describe some hippies.

But it also describes a Catholic Nun!!!

    Peace,

Which makes me wonder about all these "OLD hippie" threads.. Is it that you guys just want someone of your generation to give their opinion(totally understandable), or is it some form of intellectual elitism (not to say you don't deserve it, given your many years of experience)? Are you hinting that the older the hippy, the "hipper" and therefore more stereotypical/more knowledgeable about what it "means" to be a hippie? Because, to me, part of it is breaking DOWN barriers like "generation gap", hippie/square, embracing differences as apposed to maintaining the "status-quo" and, of course, being/doing YOUR OWN THING. Or maybe it is just a quick way to weed through a lot of the more immature posts? Anyway all I'm saying is that elders have a lot to offer the generation growing up under them and should help to open this dialogue more fully, not seek to limit it to those of a certain age (how else could we better benefit from your decades of life experience?). Likewise, young people STILL have a lot on their minds and some very valid opinions to contribute to "you". Ideas of the previous generation influence your children tremendously and each generation uses the ideas of the one before it as a launch-pad to reach even further, grow stronger herb;), and get even HIGHER, lol. Though, obviously older people have more experience to draw upon, and therefore, ideally, more to offer. I'm just saying, intelligent dialogue goes far in broadening ideas and developing philosophy as well as evolving the human spirit and liberating the individual to higher ways of being. Basically, I don't think that generation is a good litmus for "hipness"; some folks seem to think that all "hippies" were born in the nineteen forties, fifties, and early sixties, and I don't think that is fair at all, but I won't fight to be labeled or accepted. I know that the old generation "hip crowd" accepts the new, I'm sure most of you agree. I also don't like how society in general seems to accept what happened in the sixties because it is in the past, and it was the summer of love, but now "if you drop acid you are fucking up your life and damaging your brain" and "the counter-culture is over" and yada yada yada. Am I all wrong on this?

Ahh. the beautiful psychedelic era... when love was in the bird song, when it was the norm to go out of the norm by exploring the world with the help of plants and chemicals, now we're just drug-addict losers:confused:
    Man.. FUCK the man!

Most people of today are what society wants them to be and you my friend do not come across as most. As my good ole trusted saying goes...'I'm not weird! just Misunderstood!' So be who you are and be who you want to be. Stay Free,Skye.

The real ideas come's from inside, it's a feeling. Your not a fake hippie unless you *know* inside you are one. If you feel as if you are one, and you don't mind it, your "real". Hippies always stay true to themselves. Never let society make you question yourself. That's what they do, judge and question people and idea's they will never give the time of day too.

May peace always be with you brother

THanks everyone for their wisdom... These days I've started noticing people don't consider me much of a hippie anymore... It's because I don't ACT like a hippie now, I KNOW I am one, without caring if the others want me to hear psychdelic rock, be barefoot and stuff. I do the things because I know there's a reason for them, and I agree with that. These days I'm happy because I'm less "hippie" and more "myself".

Put a priority on learning to think for yourself, and be yourself even when there are negative consequences for it.
