So I know that NOT washing your hair is healthier for it really, but I can't stand how greasy my head gets after 3 or so days of not washing, plus it looks awful. I have blonde hair so it just makes me look like white trash when it's greasy! I hate washing my hair too. What to do?

yeah i hate washing my hair too,but i have to do it every two three days or it gets really greasy and smells funny (hehehe)...i've heard about powder shampoos, i dont know if they're on sale at chemists, but i saw one that came in a travelling kit that's supposed to make your hair smell fresher, but i dont know whether it might damage it..
perhaps we should switch to a shampoo for greasy hair, but that could make it dry...anyway, find out about the powder shampoo thingy if it sounds good for you.

    peace

What I don't get is people are always telling me that if I let it go greasy long enough, it will eventually stop being greasy and start cleaning itself sorta, and I'd only have to wash it like once a month. Well I went 3 weeks without washing it once (after I had a surgery on my head) and it just got extremely itchy, clumpy, and didn't look like it was anywhere near changing. Pffft.

lol...i think the idea is if you put more space between washings that your hair will eventually stop producing so much oil to compensate.
    Personally I think they're nuts.

as of now i wash my hair once a week. i started on a 3 day cycle, washing every 3 days and about a month later moved to 4 days. i kept with that for about 2 months then jumped to 7 days. im looking to work my way up to a month but i dont know if that would be practical. i have noticed a difference in my hair. it is about 4 inches past my shoulders and it hasnt been touched by siccors for over two years now. not even trimmed. people tell me if i trim it it will grow faster but i dont want to. anyway since i started washing it less i noticed that the number of split ends has gone down and even when its start to get greasy towards the end of the week it still combs really nice and is pretty soft.not washing your hair is one of those things thats not for everyone so try it if you like it go with it if not whatever, just use natural products if you can get them.:)

actually, trimming your hair will have no effect on its rate of growth.

I wash mine once a week. it's really curly and thick, so i only brush it when i wash it and i try to avoid combing it too. some kid at school hasn't washed his hair for a long time. he's got some funky dread-things goin on, but my guess is that they wont take hold from all the OIL. EEEUU

If you have greasy hair, It'll take ages to naturally clean itself (I tried), your best bet is to wash it like normal but each time leave it for a day longer than you normally would, so you gradully build it up.

Dont listen to what you've probably read, greasy hair is itchy and dandruff prone so it just gets worse if you just leave it without phasing out the washing.

My hair used to be very long and straight. I take after my dad who is from Sicili and has very black and oily hair. So basically if I didn't wash my hair every single day, the next day I couldn't deal with the feeling of how greasy it was...lol. Now I've had dreads for about 10 months and only wash my hair about once a week or once every week and 1/2-2 weeks. Surprisingly enough, even though people say dreads make you look greasy and nasty...my dreads actually make my hair look non-greasy...lol. I'm not advocating dreads for you or anything. I guess I'm just saying that eventually your hair will adjust to you not washing it...mine did.

Personally, if I still had long, straight hair, though...I'd be washing it every day...lol.

That does work and I will use it occasionally if I don't have time for a shower or if I just got my hair how I wanted it but it's oily, you just pat some in at the roots, you can let it sit a few minutes, then shake/brush out, but you have to be sure to get it all out, esp. if you have dark hair.

I haven't washed my hair for.. 6 days, it is getting a little greasy, but I'm trying to wean it off of being washed so often.

WQhen my guy had dreds the lady at this salon perscribed him this stuff that you use between washes that is a spray called "be long" it washes your hair of chemicals and oils without washing.

Now that he has no dreds I have used it many times formyself. You dont have to have long hair to use it

[IMG]Spray Cleanse is a time saving, fuss free way to keep hair clean between washings. By removing excess oil and styling products, it allows for quick hair make-over.

Vinegar will do the same, the smell takes some getting used too.

What about a towel or wash cloth soaked in hot slightly soapy (Dr. Bronner's) water and wrung out? Like, rubbing the scalp really good with it and letting it dry. Not exactly washing but I wonder if it would help cut down on the grease?

hehheee, i went through a no-washing stage, but when i DID have to break down and wash it, i used Dr. Bronners. AND DON"T USE ANY CONDITIONER! AND DON"T BRUSH IT, just "place it" with your fingers. And, i know it's icky but a little sugar water on your hands to smooth down frizzies is better than hairspray. This is how i got big messy hair and i love it when it feels out of place. hope you find what works for ya!

Seahorse, I did similiar things (the finger comb, only Dr. Bronner's, no conditioner) a long time ago and all it did was make me a giant poofball, but that was when I actually soaked the whole thing and washed it. I have naturally curly hair and it was impossible to even run my fingers through after I used Dr. B for shampoo! It was healthy and shiny, but a big blonde afro.

I'm trying to avoid getting it completely wet though, cuz cold weather's coming up.

I remember when I called central OKLA cold... Bree, try the vinegar, apple cider is best, and allow it to air for a few hours before yer sweety comes home. you can do the oil blot you described, but with the vinegar.
I used witch hazel on a cotton ball, too, but getting to all the bottom of my mop with a cotton ball takes the same amount of time as a shower!
corn rows could keep your maintenance down, also. but pay attention to the tops, my hairwraps always breed pencil dreads.
