from jewishvegan.com: 1. The following information was received from Kashrut Alert by e-mail and verified from the Orthodox Union. The Hershey Chocolate Company has announced that it will reformulate its Special Dark Chocolate bar to include Dairy components. This product's change of status will be reflected on packaging with the incorporation of the OU-D designation. 2. The following information was received from Kashrut Alert by e-mail and verified by the manufacturer and the Scroll K (Denver Vaad Hakashrus) and Star-K (Baltimore): Although all kosher varieties of Celestial Seasons herbal teas were certified by the Star-K (Baltimore) there has now been a change. Certain flavors have been reformulated and now may contain "Dairy" ingredients. Therefore, since Star-K does not certify dairy products which are not "Cholov Yisroel", the newly revised "Dairy" varieties( Cinnamon Apple Spice, Detox AM, English Toffee After Dinner Tea, Vanilla Hazelnut After Dinner Tea, Laxatea and Vanilla Maple) are now certified by the Scroll K ( Denver Vaad Hakashrus) and are to be considered as DAIRY. Check individual labels for other dairy flavors. "Celestial Seasonings Melatonim PM Herbal Tea contains a non-kosher ingredient and is not certified Kosher by the Star-K." c'mon, Special Dark was the only affordable vegan item to infiltrate the local kiddies with!!! For those who aren't up to speed on kashrut/kosher. Many mass-market products, from ketchup to dish soap have kosher certifications. Look for a "K" an Union of Orthodox's "u" inside an "O", and the word PARVE, meaning no milk or meat. BE AWARE this does not in and of itself mean the item is vegan. You will need to check labels. geletan is considered neither, for example. But it is a good way to start weeding through the products. also, Muslims have dietary laws (halal) and an alert system, too: http://www.eat-halal.com/eatingout.shtml don't know where taco bell has fries, but the rest sounds logical... and I'm avoiding pizza not from my oven! Yay take-n-bakes!
Thanks for the info. I'm a little pissed about Celestial Seasonings because I just bought a box of Detox AM. The box doesn't say anything about dairy ingredients unless you turn the box upside down, where the Kosher information indicates K Dairy. Beyond that, the only indication that there may be something dairy in it is the notorious "Natural Flavors." However, since Celestial Seasonings is owned by Hain, I guess I just figured that they would indicate dairy or animal source if that was a component of "Natural Flavors." Oh well, live and learn. I'll watch closer next time. I think the Hershey Special Dark bar has contained dairy for quite a long time, at least a year, and maybe more. That's a bummer too, because I was a big fan of special dark before they changed the recipe.
I wonder if we asked Celestial Hain (it's not a direct buy-out) for a list if we'd get it...off to e-mail! and find vegan organic chocolate. Hersheys was off my list because of Ivory Coast slavery patterns.
