It's not just "the government," it's THE SYSTEM.

We've had protests and petitions throughout the city. One development on Buckroe Beach was trashed, but their are still more planned developments on crucial marshland areas. If you lived here, you'd understand. We depend on the bay fully for food, and we're the biggest military area and port in the world. Shit, Langley Air Force base was built on marshland and destroyed many of the fisheries in Poquoson.

The government has all the effect on the bay and I actively do my part as a citizen, along with many people and certain foundations, to prevent this, so don't even attempt to give me the typical BS.

i assumed everyone qualified for food stamps...

the only people i've known who actually got them were a couple rich kids who lived with their parents and just used the food stamps to buy pop so they could dump it out and recycle the cans for heroin money.

When I was a kid I had a couple of friends who got the free school lunch tickets. Lunch was a dollar, but they would sell me a lunch ticket for fiddy cent. I'd get the dollar lunch with the ticket then use the fiddy cent I had saved to buy a coke and some chips. They had lots of extra meal tickets, too. I have no idea how they got them, but they had a lucrative business selling their lunch tickets.

I know some folks that are on them that really do need them. And, I know some folks that are on them that really don't need them.

But, the way I look at it until the system gets any better, I'd rather my tax dollars go to help one needy family and 10 unneedy families than let that 1 family do without. If the government can't make it any harder for someone to qualify for the stamps, bitching about it on here ain't doing any good.

well, @ this point, actually doing something abt our govt would require perhaps being just a wee bit uncomfortable. nowadays there isn`t a united front like there was in the past. there was a specific goal recently("geologically" speaking), that being gettin us outa vietnam. now, "us" gettin outa the middle east is an entirely different story. the middle east will never be "peaceful" as far as i can see. & we`re in the thick of it, whether we like it or not. & this takes away from other resources. we can`t "teach" democracy when we`re not one ourselves. that`s one of the greatest myths ever perpetuated in america (that we`re a democracy). & we have no rights unless they`re backed up by a strong military(that`s on "our" side). our military isn`t as strong as it once was & isn`t on "our" side, believe it or not. so, what`s happening is that we`re being tested, as it were. we`re failing said test. we`re being led by the nose into believing all will be taken care of. there are no guarantees, ever. & getting stoned isn`t going to help us get @ the truth. it may have long ago when there were only shamans doing it. the answers don`t lie in a misty haze. the answers now will be arrived @ by cold hard work. & not necessarily working for "money" as it now exists. we need,(& have needed0 a paradigm shift badly, & on a wide range. this will hurt a bit. but the only hurt will be (for some) realizing they`ve worked really hard & long for the wrong things.

I found the Texas food stamp online calculator and found out I can get up to $240 a month for food stamps. But goddamn if I'm not way way too proud to do that. I was raised better than that. I'll hit up the government if I end up with a baby in the belly on a low income because I'm not too proud to accept help if I need it for another life, but until then...

I'm going to impregnate a dozen teenage ghetto girls just so you will have to pay a little more for the benefit of poor children, I know you'll hate that.

Now point me in the direction of your sister! :D

When my brother and I were younger my mom got food stamps for a couple months. But as soon as she found a better job we were off them. This was right after my parents divorced and my mom, being a housewife, had no income to support my brother and I. But she did what she had to and asked only for a little help. Most of our lives she supported us on almost nothing, but she never got assistance after those couple months. I hate the way that government assistance is used. It's not for people who just want it easier. It's for those who are really bad off and have no other way. When you take assistance that you don't need, not only are you taking my tax dollars that I worked hard for, you are also taking money that could go to help someone much worse off than you are. You are literally taking food out of someone's mouth. I think the government needs to be a lot more strict about how they issue this assistance. I believe manditory drug tests are in order. If you can't afford to buy food, you can't afford to get high. Regular in home surprise visits to asses the situation. And many other things to keep greedy people from milking money that does not belong to them. I can't tell you how many times I had people come to the pharmacy I was working at driving escalades and such and they're on government health care. I don't qualify and I can't even afford a matchbox car. So obviously someone is lying somewhere.
Fuck!! I needed that rant. lol

No, I never have. I haven;t looked at the income requirments, but I knwo there's no way we would qualify. if we did, I would take them, if we needed them. My husband puts his life onteh line for his country. The goverment should take care of him and his family.
My mom did use low-income housing, welfare and food stamps for about two years when I was a kid, while she was finishing up her degree after she had to leave my abusive dad who did not pay child support. If the goverment enforced the child support laws then (my dad was in teh military, they could have) we would have not needed any public assistance.
When she finally sued for child support and won, the first thing she did is notify the goverment and pay back the welfare she recieved (which is a requirement in CA).
I don;t mind paying for people who don't have enough to eat. I don't mind paying for people who made bad choices and need welfare either. It's part of life. if I didn;t have a good husband and family, who knows where I would be? I know I certainly wouldn;t have the ability to make what I am capable of making now.

You know what I can;t stand? All fo the anti-abortion signs, that lend no alternatives. I mean, instead of a sign saying 'don't kill your baby'. There shoudl be a sign 'Don't kill your baby and here is how you raise your baby; alone, un or under employed and pay for the hospital bills.
I never understtod how conservatives could be so against abortions AND social services. They totally want their cake and to eat it too.
If there were more abortions there would be less welfare.

    Ever heard of adoption?

There are families willing to pay good money to mothers who don't want their child.

That's a good point. But, the signs never say that either. They're just so full of fear. If a sign instead said 'Abortion is murder, try adoption instead, here's how to get the ball rolling on that...' and then went on to list a phone number, I would be good with that.
It's just that all fo the activist groups, no matter what their stance is, never seem to offer alternatives. When you don't place alternatives in someone's mind, there's no way in hell they are goign to hop on your side of the issue.
Even with PETA, they list no alternative to fur on their signs, or any fur-like fabrics, or natural alternatives to silk. Silly example, but if PETA brought along samples of lush fake fur, they might get more people on their side than throwing blood on minks.
