-40 is the same, centigrade\Celsius and Fahrenheit

    there is no -40 kelvin.

0 kelvin is absolute zero, an absence of thermal energy.

Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in the air.

    You pass...

Even though you may have had time to look it up... You're still on notice now that I think about it. :toetap05:

It took you that long to figure out or did you drop out of elementary school?

I actually made this thread because on dexter one of the characters (vince) who is characterized as a lab rat, says his fridge is -40 centigrade.

he wouldn't have said that if he was a lab rat.

any self respecting lab rat KNOWS that this is convergence.

I didn't think that it would become the great big thread of thermodynamics.

although, that's fine and dandy because, I <3 thermodynamics, it'll be fun to talk about it.

Temperature is a measure of thermal energy in a system.

there are many more ways to measure that than atmospheric kinetics (ever use a mercury, or alcohol, or bimetal thermometer? I bet you have.)

Thermal energy is the average kinetic energy, douche bowl.

To be exact, the moment you specified "air", you were off-course.

    ah, but wait

    he said

I am questioning your use of the term atmosphere.

    which is CLEARLY incorrect.

atmosphere is, though, artistically used to describe certain, incidental, and less quantifiable factors in reality. in science, a VERY absolute term, used to describe a very LIMITED system. a very singular system

and, I am sure that you realize there is folly to the belief that there is no thermal energy in space.

as, there is only scant atmosphere there, in fact, only trace gasses and dust, not an atmosphere at all.

the "Hard vacuum of space" (though it is not truly a vacuum)

and there is energy, quite ready to be converted into thermal energy as soon as it encounters matter, of any sort, be it gaseous, plasma, liquid, solid, or that new state of matter that they've just put together with lasers in germany.

So, I hardly believe that when you use the term atmosphere.

    to describe a system.

    you are being accurate.

Oh ok. I don't really remember saying 'atmosphere' to be honest, I thought I said 'air', arguably the same thing, right?
