Hello! I'm going on a camping trip for a week an a bit in Algonquin Park. I'm going to have to try and get away from the family for a bit, as they just like sun tanning and relaxing. I personally like to ride my bike, go on hikes, get away from society and keep active. I'm staying around the 26km-30km mark off the highway. Does anyone know any cool water features? Are there any technical bike trails? Something more than XC? Is anyone gonna be there (Aug8 - Aug25) that would wanna hang out? I can bring food and hash, everyone loves food and hash right? peace&light braden
you sleeping in a tent? If so I highly suggest you bring bear spray. Many a folk have been mauled in their tents. Go to the museum up on the hill, it's really cool and there's a boardwalk out back.
I'll be in a tent, but I don't see the bears wanting to harm me. I smell a bit. I remember this museum on the hill, it's further along Highway 60 East if I remember correctly. I'll definitely have to check it out again. Thanks lunarverse. =D
I'm not too concerned about bears around Highway 60 as they mainly try to avoid human interaction with vehicles involved. I'm going to be more concerned about bears when I'm in the interior, but my last week I'm near the Highway with the family, so bears aren't a concern. So is there anything besides bears that's worth checking out? The Algonquin Park website leaves a lot to the imagination and your own willingness to explore, which is what I want to do, just with some heads-up on where to look for cool places. There HAS to be a waterfall somewhere damnit.!
I think bears will be attracted to the smell, to be honest. Here's a comparison you will understand : bears like garbage, and are attracted to it by the smell. Capiche? Other then that, Algonquin sounds gorgeous from everyone I've talked to, have a blast, kiddo.
I'm curious if the fear mongering bear hater's above have any experience in the Park or any sort of bush type setting for that matter. It's all pretty simple; keep a clean site, hang your food, garbage cookware and toiletries from the branch of a tree (away from the trunk) and don't go to bed smelling like your dinner and all will be good. If you don't give them a reason to come sniffing around in the first place, THEY WON'T. Even if you do make some of these mistakes the chances of an outright, unprovoked mauling are pretty damned slim.
Husband and I were at Algonquin in early spring and had one of the best times of our lives. For us, Algonquin was all about the wildlife. Lots of moose near hwy 60 at that time, coming out of the woods to drink the salty water by the road. Also saw loons, hawks, frogs of all kinds, porcupines, we heard wolves howling in the distance, there were mosquitoes the size of helicopters (bring bug juice), abundant birds. LIFE everywhere. There's also a cool outdoor logging museum if you're into it. Don't know of any waterfalls, but the beaver ponds are well worth the hike and nice views toward the end. There's something primeval about this place, I can't wait to go back. Enjoy.
