    Berries are not fruits.

    And tomatoes are squash

I think the reason there is so much initial disagreement with this (and I guarantee you can find data supporting whatever viewpoint you want on the intarwebz) is that humans like binary shit.

what differentiates a berry from a fruit?

because my understanding was that any plant part bearing seeds was a fruit

I'm yet to find any information on the interwebz that doesn't regard both tomatoes and berries as fruits.

    Evidence plz.

so no sources outside of what some guy, professional or not, told you once?

and a horticulturalist's perspective may vary from that of a culinary professional or a botanist...i do not know what seperates a horticulturalist from other people, except for their interest in, and knowledge of, growing plants

tomatoes are treated as culinary vegetables, and botanically (as far as i am aware) as fruits

no offence, but even at good universities colleagues within the same disciplines will teach their students differing things based on what they believe is right.....for instance, i've taken a neuroscience class wherein the professor expressed disdain for the efficacy of virtually all brain scanning techniques, yet other people swear by them and regard their interpretations as practically gospel truth...this sheds no light on which view is more accurate, it simply illustrates the point that even people who "know what they're talking about" disagree and one person's words don't REALLY make good evidence...

True berries are by the botany definition always fruit, but not all fruit are berries. For instance strawberries, raspberries and boysenberries are not technically berries. Squash is a fruit. If squash = tomato then tomato = fruit

I thought squash was squash and squash was a veggie.

In my mind that's like saying "Yes, it's a carrot." :p

    read the stuff facey posted.

squash is a culinary vegetable, as in it is treated as a veggie in the kitchen because it is savory, but it is botanically classified as a fruit. People just don't think of it as such since it is not very sweet.
