arty: Congratulations! That is an excellent first step. Once you get a handle on the calories and saturated fat grams, you will be well on your way to a future of good health. Forget other opinions and do it for yourself. I did 8 miles yesterday, which is a little above my average. I need to drop about 10 pounds. I only use a treadmill when the weather is bad.
i mean i dont but its kinda like the same thing as black people thinking cops are only after them. or white people thinking black people are criminals which brings you back to the first statemnt but its w/e
Ok, first of all I don't believe a word of your post. Natural selection, eh? By your argument, wouldn't we have fewer overweight people in the world instead of more if it was all down to natural selection? There are thin healthy people who are attracted to overweight people. I see them all the time. I know quite a few couples that fit this description. Perhaps your narrow view of reality won't let you see this. Next point. Your friend did not run ten miles a day if he was 80 pounds overweight. THERE IS NO WAY. Was he an imaginary friend? I'm not making an argument that people with weight issues are just fine and there are no health risks...obviously there are. It's people's "I'm better than you, you're a loser" attitude that is part of the problem as well. Why not be positive and offer some encouragement to these people instead of treating them as though they're second class?
^^ amen bro im like overweight but im not obese im like maybe 15lbs over but i do plan to start doing a workout plan 50 laps (id say my pool is like 20+ ft long) 50 push ups 100 crunches (with that twisty thing) and every other day a 20 mile road bike loop but im not giving up smoking or anything. haha
Those two statements arent true, they pertain to stereotyping, no one believes all white people think every black person is a criminal. But everyone does believe obese is unhealthier than ideal weight You are a dude, when you go looking for porn on the net you going to try tell us it doesnt matter what the stars look like? There is no use berrating others for judging by appearance when you do it. We all know every single human on the planet does it. As for fat, if fat means overweight, well most people are nowadays. Overweight can be attributed to genes and modern society, no one believes Obese is just down to genes and sitting in front of a computer 40 hrs a week
As I said before I'm totally cool with people who are overweight that are cool with it. It's their decision. The people that piss me off are the whiners who bitch and moan about their condition without doing anything about it, claiming it's "their lot in life" or some similar bs. I guess what I meant by natural selection is that in general (i.e. 90-95% of American men) prefer thin chicks with XYZ features, not because of some "media conspiracy" but because it's just nature, natural selection. Not trying to sound like some evolution eugenics nazi here, I realize I probably came across that way. I hate those fuckers too :cheers2: As for the thin/fat thing, yeah they are out there, but usually it's either: a) Small minority of dudes who are into fat chicks just like some guys like blondes/brunettes or whatever b) Thin guy sees themselves as "not attractive" for whatever reason and so doesn't go for someone they might be more attracted to because they don't think could get them (classic example: your stereotypical insecure computer nerd type) As for girls, obviously chicks are waaaay more about personality so you see tons of fat dude/thin chick couples. And yeah sorry if I wasn't clear didn't think it was important but my friend worked up to 10 miles a day in about one month. He started at 6 miles a day though right off the bat (he was already a serious rugby player so he was SOMEWHAT in shape, just still very overweight) Yes fat people can run if they try hard. And there is such a thing as a decent fat runner . (like I said, go watch some rugby games )
Nox, I see where you're coming from....anyone that bitches about any situation that they can physically do something about has no right to bitch in the first place, but many people cannot help certain physical things. Metabolic rates and such are often predetermined to a large degree, there's certain things we can do to attempt at manipulating them but usually that can cause more harm than good. Anyways, to the OP...I feel you! I've never been "big" but I use to be really skinny (still kinda am) and I couldn't gain weight at all no matter how much I ate, so it's only natural to assume that one could be the opposite of that despite their attempts to do so (loose weight). Fuck what other people think....there's still a few of us who actually do enjoy someones personality and mental contributions more than their physical attributes. Sometimes we've just gotta take the bad with the good and it seems as though the bad outweighs the good, but it is what is, people are not going to change.....superficiality is prevalent in many societies now, good luck ever escaping it. Anyways, I use to love this song and still do..it's a great reggae jam...I hope it brings you joy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRWed_9U3w4&feature=related
^aamen dude. but you should take like whey protien and lift a bunch of weights and get ripped but still be skinny haha
While I’m not trying to judge all fat people, I work alongside this guy whose brilliant but had two knee operations over the last 6 years because he’s 200 lbs overweight Hotwater
Thanks for the um, encouragement, but I really hope you weren't implying that I eat gratuitous calories all day. God, sometimes I just want to make a food blog or something so people can see. I know I eat healther than 85% of my friends. I've also been the only one to consistently exercise. (And in case you were wondering, my friends are mostly average-sized.) I hear statistics and can't really imagine what typical Americans eat... Oh yeah, I remember: Tons of sugar and meat... Fuckin' gross, man... I had no idea this threat would grow to 4 pages. There are alot of things I both concur and disagree with, but hey, I guess that's the point of debating.
You didn't get much of it in this thread. No, it's just that exercise by itself probably won't be enough. Most Americans don't know shit about calories, fat grams, and fiber. So they try fad diets, fail, and give up. Your friends may be lucky enough to have fast metabolisms right now, but it won't last. I used to be one of those people who could eat whatever I wanted and get away with it. No more. I had to get smart and get my act together. I don't want to be like my mother, who put on so much weight that she destroyed her knees. Now she isn't able to exercise, and she is over the weight limit for knee replacement surgery. And she has high blood pressure. All that could have been avoided. My dad was also slack about health management issues, and died of a heart attack at age 59. I used to think too much about food, too often. That's the way I was brought up. I had to find other things to occupy my mind.
I didn't lay the "willpower rap" on you. And I didn't characterize you as "fat". I believe you did in the title of this thread. And I didn't make up the health problems associated with obesity, which are well-documented. Obesity makes almost every kind of health problem worse, and is an active contributor to several others. I pointed out that many, many people have been able to lose 100 pounds or more. My point was that it can be done. In your original post, you lamented that people ridicule you or call you names and you wondered why this should be so ... I tried to offer a thought or two on why it is that they do that. I'm not saying that you are an unworthy person simply because of your weight or your body type or whatever it is. But being severely overweight has parallels to smoking, in terms of being a health hazard. One, you do it yourself ... it's not like you've contracted a virus or some weird kind of bacteria. That's not a "willpower rap" ... it's simply a fact. And two, it is reversable. This is just a variation of the old "eat all your dinner ... think of the starving children in [wherever]" argument. You speak as though the only choices are starvation or obesity. If you mean that the human body needs a certain amount of fat, then yes of course that's true. Fat has a purpose. Cheetahs, for instance, have almost zero body fat, and as a consequence, they can starve to death in something like 48 hours. Like most everything, there is an optimal amount of fat. Too much or too little is not healthy. I'm not sure what you mean by "healthy fat". Fat is fat. It's not the fat itself that in unhealthy ... it's the wrong amount of it that creates the problem. Well, that's good. I'm not sure how relevant it is, however. It's entirely possible to be in terrible physical condition without being overweight. That's why diet by itself isn't enough for good health. Diet and exercise ... diet and exercise ... there's no way to get around it.
check out these masterpieces by the artist Peter Paul Rubens. in his era voluptuous women were considered the sexiest. http://www.canvasreplicas.com/images/Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus Peter Paul Rubens.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Rubens_-_Judgement_of_Paris.jpg http://www.topofart.com/images/artists/Peter_Paul_Rubens/paintings/rubens010.jpg you can probably thank the 60s fashion model Twiggy for today's "beauty" standards. before Twiggy women like Marilynn Monroe and Betty Page were the gold standard of beauty. those beautiful women were plump and buxum. nowadays we have models that look like heroin addicts, all skinny and sickly looking. i have trouble gaining weight and keeping it on. i have to force myself to eat, especially during the summer. when i get too skinny i look just awlful, skeletal. i wish i could be more Rubenesque. i bet you're actually quite beautiful.
You know whats funny, i was watching a thing for a tv show called who is the biggest loser couple, and every one of them were fat people. not just chubby, fat. And they were all cheering in joy when they got accepted to be on the show. Lol that is a loser if they want to be publicly humiliated. On a side note i do everything i can to get fatter. I don't want to be fat but i do want more meat on my bones. I don't eat too much sugar, cause i used to be a hardcore sugar addict, and that is not good for you. There are plenty of reasons why sugar is bad other than obesity, mainly the risk of diabetes. But yeah currently i eat as much meat as i possibly can, and everything else avoiding processed crap, but still eat sugar every day. I am lucky. But i do excercise every day because it makes me feel good. On another side note, i do have a few friends that are legally "fat" and they are awesome people. It seems like it just suits their personality and i respect them. They aren't too fat though, there is a limit if you are too fat, them i will be thinkin to myself "wtf are you doin to urself buddy. The fat is trapping your body from life." Being in good shape makes life exciting though, you get all the girls to check ou out, and you can just pick any one of them.
the obsession with skinniness is a cultural phenom. mostly American. American kids, especially little girls, are bombarded by images (usually photoshopped) of super thin models. a little girl's self esteem goes in the toilet if she feels she doesn't fit into the narrow criteria of American "beauty" standards. her peers tease her, the boys shun her. young girls go bulemic, anorexic, even get suidcidal. it's a crying shame that perfectly fine looking young women get mentally ill b/c our society is so shallow, disdainful and intolerant. there's a difference between "obese" and "robust" but our society doesn't seem to know it.
You are correct, and it's terribly ironic that this obsession exists side by side with the fact that more Americans are obese than ever before. But having said that, I worry about the backlash against the super-thin models. There seems to be a movement toward the opposite extreme ... glamorizing overweight models under the pretext that they're more representative of "average" women. That's dangerous thinking. It doesn't matter what the "average" is. What matters is good health, and the fact is extremes in either direction are not healthy. I do think there's a saving grace here, and that is that the fashion industry goes in cycles. There have been times in the past when the plump look was considered more fashionable, so I think eventually we'll naturally swing away from the "stick" look. I hope so. But I also hope that we don't go too far in the other direction.
There is a strong line that seperates high fashion models, and pin up sex goddess models. And there is still a distinct separation.
