Why do young people listen to oldies?Because a lot of music today sucks. And don't yell at me for generalizing, because I didn't say "All music sucks." Maybe a reason that music was better then is because artists actually had to be talented. They didn't have technology to cover up for someone bad.
Also back then, there was such talent...people like Hendrix, Joplin, Garcia, Lennon...there will never be others like them. They revolutionized music. There was so much more passion back then, the artists didn't care solely about money. I'm not saying that money didn't make a difference, because it did. For example, did you hear that the Beatles were offered $5 million to come tour the US (before they landed later on...) and they turned it down? I don't know if I'm making sense, but old music to me sounds so much better than most of the music today.

I just love music and it just so happens the music I prefer was written and recorded decades ago and truth be told it dosn't rock any less now then it did then. But at the same time I like some new music also, but it just fails to provoke the passion within me as classic rock does.

I'll say this though, there was just as much manufactured horse shit in the 60's and 70's and especially 80's as there is today, I hate just as much music from that era as I do from this one, but the difference between 1974 and 2004 is the GOOD music. There just isn't anywhere near as much now as there was then. No one today can rival Led Zep, Bowie, Floyd, Lennon, Sabbath, Dylan, T Rex etc. etc. etc.

And besides, every day I discover new songs from artists of the 60's and 70's which I havnt heard before, so it is new to me really.

B/c most of the bands out today suck and are totally musically and lyrically challenged wit the exception of a few bands like moe., phish, primus, SCI, and KELLER just to name a few...

i guess back then music was different and appealed more to those who believe in a change in society (most adults didnt want their children to listen to rock, for example cos they thought it had satanic messages, etc...they simply couldnt allow the fact that times were changing and music had a lot to do with that) Now music from other decades seems more appealing to me personally cos most of the stuff out there today (well, mainstream stuff) lacks originality. if it's not a led zeppelin clone is britney spears league or boy bands *oh man* i'm sure they're planty of great new bands out there, sadly i havent had the chance to listen to their stuff.

anyway i could say more but i'm not feeling like typing today.

I dont see why younger people listening to older stuff is such a big deal??? Music is there to be listened to and be enjoyed by all...if the music a younger person enjoys happens to be from another decade, who are we to criticize??? At least they are listening to decent music! lol.

For a start if your a so-called Punk Rocker you might listen to The Clash, Sex Pistols etc and Some of us may listen to more older music because it's alot better than some of todays music (exception of The Datsuns, The Mars Volta, Kings Of Leon, The Libertines and RadioHead) Because bands like Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Tangerine Dream, Gong, Hendrix Experience etc has a larger impact on music than a band like Razor Light or Muse. And what's so wrong about listening to 'older music' anyway, if you don't like it then go away. (please)

They listen to oldies because when they're driving in the car with their parents, their parents put on the oldies station (because it's "safe" music and they know all the songs) and the kids end up learning all the songs. Plus, oldies are easy to sing along to. At least...that's what happened in my family...lol.

That is totaly wrong some many great bands have come out of the 80's and 90's

    Ill make a small list

    Metallica
    Nirvana
    Peral Jam
    Phish
    The Police
    Alice in Chains
    System of a Down
    Dave Mathews Band
    Oasis
    Black Label Society
    Rage Against the Machine
    Sound Garden
    Stone Temple Pilots
    The Talking Heads

The list could go on and on, I love my oldies but im not going to totaly disown todays music for the sheer fact that it came out in 80s,90s,00s.
Also if its meaning, and depth to your songs I'd look into Rage, System of a down, and many others on the list.

Its personal isnt it, its all totally subjective, if you dont think something is good, chances are, no one is gonna change your mind.

I listen to 'oldies' stuff for the same reason people still read shakespeare and watch old films, become hippies, and punks, and drive old cars...

because I like it, and its still as good as it was then... aside from that, if there was a current alternative that suited my taste, and there are a few, I would go for it

He likes Blink 182. Check out his "top 20 Punk Rock Songs."

And, yes, '60s & '70s music has much deeper meaning than most (or all, to a certain extent) of today's music.

It's really hard to predict what your parents will hate. My dad quite liked Slipknot but described Mercury Rev as tuneless and inept. He's weird. i don't get him.

It makes no sense to just ignore old music simply because it's old. If you do, what was the point of it in the first place? A good tune then is a good tune now. plus I listen to Cage and Stockhausen because the rest of the music world still hasn't really caught up with them yet.

Wow your dumb. Why do young people listen to oldies. WHy does anyone still listen to Behtoven? Why do people still read About Romeo and Juielt and Don Quioxte. Why do we watched tv shows and movies that weren't made in the 21th century? Hmmm not so hard now is it?

because some of us call it "our music." Not everyone here is a teen or young adult.
As for pre-pop, I really like the folk collections from the Lomaxes, some social protest/commentary from the US Civil War era, baroque, world beat that really is "oldies," ragas.
    Is music from 1500BCE "oldies?"

Well, in my case, I was into punk a couple of years ago...the lyrics are really meaningful (listen to the unseen) but not understandable. Then MTV decided to ruin the punk scene by putting out good charolette and those other ass munchers. Then you coouldnt say you liked punk without people thinking you meant all that pop punk crap. then my mom bought me some Zeppelin, Sabbath, The Doors and Hendrix for christmas and i was hooked. It seemed to have a great message and a great sound. Not that punk didnt have a good sound, but on a scale of 1-10 punk would be at 7, classic rock at 9. Besides, this stuff will never get old because I'm constantly discovering new bands.

Most 60s and 70s music had better lyrics than today's music. I feel like I can relate to a lot of the topics in songs. Plus, musicains were artists back then...not the computer-generated, lip-syncing puppets they are now.
