Has anyone seen this? Whadya think? I couldn't get through the whole thing it was soooooooo bad. My friend was smoking and toking and he couldn't take it either.....wow, it was embarrassingly bad like a really sucky high school play-poor writing and acting. It was a big let down because people talk about it being so cool and funny and all. It is like The Maltese FAlcon. THE great classic that you finally get to see and are embarrassed for the actors. hugs Delfynasa ps if these are your favorite movies of all time- sorry. Don't feel bad I like all the movies no one else does.
I think you missed the point. It is called camp. Yes, it was bad. It was hokey. It was propaganda and lies made in the 1930s marijuana scare. It became popular in the '60s because of its absurdity (just like the actual absurd laws still in force against Cannabis). Those who smoke dope know how absurd it was, and makes us suspect any other anti-drug message.
"Reefer Madnes" became a hit Broadway musical in 1998 (Kristen Bell made her national debut in the Original Broadway Cast as Mary Lane) The show mocked the 1936 propaganda film, but also expanded to mock the preachy anti-drug campaigns of the 1980s. It ran for 3 years & was turned into a movie in 2005, starring Original Broadway Cast members Christian Campell (Jimmy), Kristen Bell (Mary), John Kassir (Ralph), & Rob Torti (Jesus), plus Alan Cumming (The Lecturer), Steve Webber (Jack), Ana Gastayer (Mae), & Amy Spranger (Sally). Check it out, it's awesome!!!
I've heard about it but have seen only snipets on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1jB7RBGVGk Hotwater
I recently picked up a copy - UK readers might like to know that Poundland was stocking it, for £1, naturally. Worth taking a risk on. It wasn't what I was expecting... somehow I thought it was some kind of 1960s Easy Rider type thing. This was anti-drug propaganda ? Seemed to me that it would have completely the opposite effect on any free-thinking individual.
the song at the being of the woody narrated film is such a great song. it's in the first few minutes.
ha I thought it was really funny how they made it sound like they were knowledgeable people on the subject of marijuana and had scientifically proven is harmful effects and that although the film is fictional it's meant to portray real life events and scenarios........ yet they show NO understanding of what marijuana is. When i first realized the 'dope fiend' (the guy who looks like a crack fiend playing the piano) is sneaking into the closet to get his fix of weed, and the people on the other side of the door (keeping in mind the closet door is not even a solid door its one of those angled multi-panel doors where smoke could easily get through) are completely oblivious to the weed being smoked 5 feet from them in a closet....? then at some point they try to make it seem like weed is a potential date rape drug by portraying a scenario in which the creepy older weed fiend tricks the young girl into smoking weed by switching her regular cigarette with a marijuana cigarette at which point she goes into an uncontrollable fit of laughter and is unable to stop creepy older weed guy from trying to rape her. Uhhhhh wut? the idea that someone could smoke a joint (almost the entire thing I may add) and think the entire time it was anything else is absurd. and then convincing the kid he shot the girl during his manic weed induced frenzy?? like.....did these people know they were publishing complete nonsense or had they never even been exposed to mary j and just follwed some higher up idiots orders?
