I was just talking to someone about dogs and it got me thinking about the hell I went through with one of my dogs and the vet. One day I noticed my dog was acting really strange. He kept hiding from me and wouldn't come when we called him. So I decided to keep him close by and away from the other dog until I could find out what was wrong with him. Then he started throwing up this foamy mucus stuff. I know then that it was parvo. My other dog had it when I first got him. I didn't want to wait very long to get him treatment and I was stuck at home with no car. So I walked the three miles to the nearest vet with the dog in my arms. The vet was closed for lunch so I had to wait outside for an hour until they got back. Finally the vet came back and then didn't want to see the dog because parvo is contaigous and he didn't want to get the other dogs sick. I'm like, what the fuck. He wouldn't give me the meds if he didn't know what it was for sure and he would examine my dog. I finally talk him in to looking my dog over. I tell him that I will do whatever it takes to help my dog, but I won't have any money until Friday, two days away. He says he needs payment up front. I ask if I can give him the check and just have him hold it for two days. Businesses don't usually do all their banking everyday anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. He tells me that maybe I should just let the dog die, seeing ass how I can barely take care of myself. I couldn't believe this. I'm tell him that my money situation is just fine. Plus, even if I need to sell everything I own, I'm taking care of my dog. He wants $300 to treat my dog, but says I can buy the meds for $80 and treat him myself. I was about to have a week off from work and knew I could be with my dog 24/7, so I opted to treat him myself. The vet tells my that he really doesn't think my dog is gonna live and I'm wasting my time and money. I take my dog home treat him and he's cured in 3 day. What the hell kind of vet is that anyway? I miss the vets in Mexico. It cost me $25 to treat my other dog with parvo, in the vet's office and they were so much nicer, and so attentive to my dog's needs. This is one of my few experiences with American vets. Are they all like this? Sorry for such a long post. I'm long winded.:cheers2:
I can completely understand your frustration with American veterinarians, since many of them are simply greedy sob's who take advantage of people who truly love their dogs. It is important to note that there are a few good US veterinarians out there who uphold their Hippocratic oath, but they are becoming hard to find. Remember, to never give up hope and the fight for the sake of your dogs and you too...
That's such a sad story That vet really was an asshole. I'm shocked actually, since vets are generally meant to be animal lovers. My vets have always been a brilliant help. I've also never settled a bill upfront. My cat once cost in excess of £1,000 (GBP) in vet bills and it was all put on a tab. The cat came first, the bill came second. I hope you find a more caring vet though.
I'm wondering if it might be a problem with the US vets. Like I said, I was very happy with the vets in Mexico. Not just for the money part of it, they were very good with the animals.
America, the land of the free, and home of the fucking assholes. It's such a money racket, doctors and vets, here in Southern California.
It wasn't so bad in AZ. I think it's because they had to compete with Mexico. But I also didn't have much experience with vets before Mexico. So I can't be sure. I would think SoCal wouldn't be so bad since they also have to compete with Mexico. How much would you pay for a neutering job there?
Seems there ought to be somewhere in your locality that would do it just because it's sane, like a clinic.
On what grounds? I could have reported him to the better business bureau, but that would take forever just for them to say "naughty, naughty vet", or nothing at all. I don't think there was grounds to sue.
I don't think any of that applies. He has a business, his business is to treat animals for money. Nothing says he's gotta be nice about it. I think he should go out of business and someone should kick his old ass. But I don't think there is anything he did that is either illegal or worthy of me taking him to court.
I guess so. It's different here. I'd have at least got a public protest together outside his office though. Still, I'm glad your pet is ok. Well done for looking after it so well.
I can see doing a protest. But I wouldn't be able to get any kind of support around here. No animal lovers. Dogs are protection and status symbols only. I'm very glad I was able to take care of my dog. It's my responsibility. I just wish that more people felt that way, too.
That's a hell of a difference! It's like that here though. I looked for somewhere local just to have my rabbit neutered and everywhere I looked it was crazy expensive. I was told it should cost around £40, but everywhere I looked it was around £70-£130. I ended up using my local vets who did a good price, since I know them well and they treat my other animals. But the cost is incredible!
It would seem to me that they would want to keep the prices low to combat the amout of strays and unwanted animals being put to sleep. But apparently all things serve the $
Hey, TishaMc--don't let that one vet sour you on all of them--there's a lot of good ones out there! You say he was old? Maybe he's close to retiring and didn't want to take on another case--but the least he could have done was refer you to another vet so your dog could get treatment! I know what it's like to have a dog with parvo--when my dog Merlin was almost 1 year old, he got parvo--I have no idea how or where--but he got it! Anyway, I took him to my vet, and he got the treatment he needed, and now he's a happy, healthy, almost-7-year-old dog! I think I've got some of the best vets in my hometown--I'd recommend 'em to anyone!
