10 inches of rain in four days,it can stop now.. i think the rain carried that fucking blight in with it. looks like we are going to lose a lot.. oh well thats a farmers life. we will make due.gonna be pushing it on tobacco for a year as one patch of it seems to have been attacked.. strange year for gardens in the east. if i was to put my tin foil hat on i would be tempted to say someone was up to no good.. hey mcleod you keep talkin about the rain there, how much rain yall had in the past week?
Dunno, I ain't measured it. It's dry today, but grey and windy and sitting at about 15 degrees C. They said on the news a few days ago it's been the wettest july since 1888 though. Last year there were crop failures everywhere as well, hence the fact food prices seem to have rocketed. Had a few torrential spells here but strangely enough there have been no reports of flooding, I guess they only happen if the rain happens to hit a region that is susceptible to flooding. I'm sure there will be floods aplenty this winter. I just look out my window, and see the jet stream rolling past, it's fucking 'orrible.
oh bloody hell i just read a article saying 122 mm. that aint even 5 inches over a month.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8177094.stm youd be really miserable here..lol
It's been raining here for two days, but I think it's meant to continue. Love the rain, just hate the tornadoes that come with it. HHB - do you farm for a living or just for your own personals?
i dunno if i would call it tropical, but yeah we have a couple inches of rain in a hour and then the sun comes out a lot of times. it does get gray and overcast for days on end here with not a lot of rain as well though. thats more winter weather though.. where i live averages 72 inches of rain a year.
we farm to live..lol we grow all our own vegetables and raise all our own meat. there is no way we could afford to buy groceries.. so yes,we farm to live..
I'd like to be self sufficent. That's what I hope to do if my aunts and uncles allow me to buy their land that they don't use. It'd only be four acres, but I think that would be sufficiant. With how rich the Florida soil is. We'd probably have the same problem with too much water here too. How much land does it take to feed your family?
we have about 15 acres here but the majority is a managed wood lot since we heat and cook 100% with wood. as far as vegetable gardens, we utilize i would say about a acre. we also grow tobacco for the two of us. and grow some grains. we raise rabbits for meat, chickens for eggs and meat and goats for meat and milk. that takes another couple acres. it would be nice to have another couple fenced acres for the goats but we make due. a acre of garden will easily feed a family of four year round almost anywhere in america. the folks at www.pathtofreedom.com raise 6000 pounds of fruits and vegetables on a 1/10 of a acre annually.
That sounds like a good deal. I'm a vegan, so I won't need too much more than just for fruits and veggies. Although, if I have my own chickens I'll start eating eggs again. I do want goats because I'm told they will clear a lot of the overgrowth around the swamps that we have. Supposed to reduce the cotton mouth population. It would take a lot of money to clear the land enough to live on though. It's 5 acres of wooded area, one acre of which is all swamp. Not too keen on that part. I don't know how you do the whole slaughtering yourself. I don't think I could. What do you do for power, or are you on the grid. I mean, obviously you have internet, but from other posts I get the impression that you don't go much in the way of over use in the power area.
yeah we are on grid mainly because we cant afford to go off grid. i mean we are set up to where we can easily live with no modern conveniences, but to go off grid and still have the net, a few lights, a fridge, etc. is a bit out of our justifiable price range to accomplish..
You could take turns riding a bike to produce power. lol That's one of the main things that I can't figure out how to do. Get affordable power off grid. I mean there is solar power, but it's expensive. Maybe by the time I can do this it'll be cheaper. Maybe water power... wind... lol Hitch a bunch of bison up to a turny thing. Figure something out. I can go without TV, but I need music and would prefer internet. And with as many creepy crawlies are out here, light is a must. lol
