Hello fellow writers! You know, Ken Kesey wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest on psychedelic drugs. Does anyone out there have any drug they prefer to enhance their writing? What, why, and how? I find amphetamines help me by inspiring me, unleashing creativity, and stamina! :D

Speed kills. Are you on your way to being a forty year old in a twenty year old body? Or just maybe, is the next hit going to be the hit that ended the ball game?

@OP yeah, man! I write all the time when I'm smoking bud. It helps get rid of my sober writer's block :D

I don't think three sentences add up to a lecture. By the way, I have one brother and one sister, and you're not either one.

Wow I didn't know that! Quite interesting....the book is so organized, though, which is why it's hard for me to believe he wrote it while on drugs. It's too well thought out! Then again, I've never done psychedelics, so who knows, maybe that kind of writing can be achieved under that influence.

The only time I tried writing under any influence (herb), it was horrible. I get too pretentious, too "totally cosmic, dude" without any actual intelligence, or coherence, while stoned. That's just me, though. I know plenty of people who write very well while high. I personally can't.

Lol I wrote the majority of my papers stoned last year, and lets just say it wasn't a very good idea. I find myself to not care as much about what is "appropriate" for school while I'm high.

well, Kesey wrote the first three pages of the book while on Peyote (that's where he got the inspiration for the crazy Indian guy). But I think the rest of the book was written "relatively" sober.

^^^ So basically, the lesson we have learned from this is that if you do peyote, you will be able to write three whole pages, most of which involve the hallucinations of a schizophrenic Native American, and have very little to do with the overall plot.

It's pretty common knowledge that even most books about drugs were written while sober. The reason is because most drugs remove that critical facility that is important into shaping your work into something coherent.

The reason that people think that writers do their best work while high is because there's a certain romanticism to the notion of the self-destructive artist, or someone who has to destroy themselves in order to create.

But I'd have to argue that the best thing for a writer is a mixture of experience, fresh air and exercise...

I agree with this, writing on drugs can make it harder to stay coherent. But I also think that a lot of writers are inspired by their experiences with drugs. I know that personally, certain drugs exponentially increase my sensitivity to art, especially psychedelics and ganja. Drugs also bring me to places I could never have imagined in a sober mindset, thereby giving me more material to draw from.

Drugs can either make writing magical, or stupid as hell. Ken Kesey was one of the magical ones.

Anyone who can write on peyote isn't doing peyote right.

yeah i guess this is why people have the myth that Kerouac wrote On the Road in three days during a Benzedrine binge.

    in my experience,

barbiturates + alcohol = some good writing. mostly illegible, but good idea flow nonetheless.

cannabis = not so great writing. disassociated writing, not personal

hallucinogens = typing the whole novel on the neck of an acoustic guitar
