I was referring to the Mayan civilization. The OP was incorrect in saying it was the Maya. I am well aware that the Mayan people still exist. Some of my workers are Mayan. You are splitting hairs my friend.
Nah, they started going off in tangent about urban myths. One of them involved Flintstones vitamins. I mentioned I liked gummy bear vitamins. Nothing about Mayans as far as I know. But I wouldn't be surprised if gummy stuff killed them off. That stuffs no good for you.
the mayan civilization may have been in serious decline for more or less unknown reasons (generally assumed to be political upheaval) by the 9th century or so, the culture, while not as prominent as others, did continue to exist until the arrival of the spanish, as the spanish did their best (and in fact a damned good job) to eliminate the use of the mayan writing system, without first trying to learn it themselves. this would suggest that written histories (many were destroyed by the spanish and by time, of course) as well as the folklore and at least some other highly important aspects of the mayan civilization remained. at least, this is what i just now saw on nova
Yes the descendants are still around. In fact as I recall there is about 31 different Mayan Languages that are still being spoken. I could be wrong about that number. None of the 31 Mayan languages can understand each other. The Mayans I know are very interesting people.
but i wasn't talking about mere descendants or spoken remnants of linguistic traditions...i'm talking about the trappings of an advanced civilization being in place when the spanish got there. as i understand it, not all mayan cities had been abandoned. i DO know that the writing system and the bulk of the cultural traditions and ideology still existed, as well, most of which was lost for a handful of recent generations until the mayan writing system was mostly deciphered and much information was regained. but again, all i know is mostly what i just saw on nova, and while it is an entertaining and decently well backed program, it IS just a popular science program and not necessarily the best source for such info
I was talking about the OP original post. I did not question your information in any way whatsoever. In fact I made no mention of your Nova show because I already explained my position in this thread. So you can you assume I was not questioning anything you were saying. Because it was not relevant to what I said. But if you would like to play.
lol, good one, that's funny. Reminds me of that homer simpson comment on thomas edison "if he was so smart, how come he's dead?".
