hey all im new to the forum, not knotty yet but i have wanted to since i was a kid
parents never would let me tho...
    so i forgot about it
but i went to rainbow this year and saw WAAAAAY too many badass dreads not to want some immediately
so im definitely determined to do it now but im just growin out the locks

i have heard mixed answers to the question though, whats the best length to start dreading?
i work from home so i dont really care if they look like shit for a while when im makin em.

but i am gonna do some small tight dreads i think so i can still get a job as a pharmacist later in life LOL

    im thinkin pry something like

I have that first pic as my desktop. Welcome. Best length is anything longer than 3 inches. Read around the forum a bit to get whatever questions you want answered :)

Chomp- do not set your expectations so high.
All of the people in those photographs had seemingly mature dreads...years and years in the making. And as for you saying that the first photo isn't tight...They seemed pretty tight to me!

There is no right length to start them. may it be three inches or three feet, the process is pretty much the same. Beware-there will be shrinkage, and for a long while it will seem to not grow at all. So I'd say it is best to start right away. I mean, I had been wanting them for two years now, and I just got around to starting them. I wish I had just let it go then, I'd have great dreads by now.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Hello, my name is Stew, and I am 47, I live in Adelaide South Australia. I am not working at the moment, but am looking for job. I usually work in the construction industry. I have had dreads for over a year now and love them. I was inspired by Bob Marley after seeing him at a concert here in Adelaide a few years before he died. I still remember his concert. It really was a experience to remember. Anyway after all those years of admiring but not seriously considering it, I was in a drug rehab and I just stopped brushing my hair and let it grow after 12 months I got a friend who knew what she was doing to backcomb my hair, and she used hair clay to hold it. That was over a year ago,and now after a lot of frustration and doubt I still have my dreads and for the most part love them. I also love reggae. I admire the spiritual side of dreadlocks and reggae and that is why I now wear dreadlocks.

Hair clay worked well for me. At the time I didn't know a lot about dread care. She told me to keep clay in hair and not wash for 5 weeks. Then wash with Tea tree non residue, which I did. she also told me not to use wax. The hair clay ( there are lots of brands ) which she recommended was Matrix DirtyTrix. I have to say that this worked well and when I washed all out after bout 3 months my hair was well and truly locked. On the negative side though it contains petrolatum [ whatever that is ] and makes hair feel stiff. also had a few problems with new growth not locking, but I think I needed more patience. Growing dreads is a learning experience for me. I have also used dreadhead wax and for me the clay was better. Since finding this site and reading bout other peoples methods and experiences i have been using nothing in my hair.

That is interesting. I Haven't heard of that.
Most, if not all people here will suggest leaving your hair to do its thing.

Are you able to find a camera and take pictures of you seemingly lovely locks?
    I'd love to see 'em.
