I have been composing electronica music for a while now and respected friend recently listened to my latest production and said I should start thinking about looking to get signed.

Right now, though, I know almost nothing about the business side of music and how one goes about finding a label and negotiating the deals etc.

I know that producers are known for being weasels and I'm sure that's not the only thing to worry about.

Anyone know of a good way to learn that stuff? Maybe a good book, or, even better, maybe an online resource?

I think this is really depending on your location and what style you are playing for what reason. I imagine getting into contact with promoters would be helpful. Talk to record shop owners and ask for advice. I'm sure you will come across a few people who will ask to hear your stuff, and if they like it they may get you into contact with someone or have their friends listen to it.

Seems like their are plenty of record labels out there, but obviously some are better than others. I'd be hesitant to get signed by a company who doesn't know what they are doing and is overwhelming themselves with half decent artists that aren't going anywhere.

If you have some funds, consider self promoting and being on your own label. It seems like with electronic music it common for people to produce on their own or get some people together on your own label.

Make sure to get involved with pod casts, internet radios, and other electronic sites that feature artists for free. Someone in the biz might just come across your stuff and like it.

I'm no musician, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents.

Also try this site. Didn't really look it over too well so I'm not sure if it is for gimmicks or real advice.
