I completely disagree with this. There have been many musicians who have written incredible music who don't know how to read sheet music. The fact that one does not know how to read sheet music does not negate the fact that they have ears and possibly an immense amount of talent.

I can read music because I am a professional vocalist, so I'm not just talking out my ass here. I know from observation and from personal experience. My boyfriend can only read tabs yet he writes brilliantly.

But this is definitely the wrong thread for this so... let's get back on topic mmk guys. get nekkid

to the last several posters. nowhere in that post did i say u have to be able to read and write music to have talent. what i said was true. many guitarists can not read or write music. they may be talented but they are missing what i consider to be a vital part of a musician.

 

A musician is someone who makes music.. any kind of music in any kind of way. If you don't need to read music to make music, then you don't need to read music to be a musician.

 

I can read sheet music but can't do much with it. lol So there's the opposite... reading music certainly doesn't make you a musician.

 

Like how reading English doesn't always make you any good at writing it

 

nobody said reading music makes u a musician. there are so many factors that make u a musician. i did say that i consider it to be a vital skill that any musician should know. u guys really do try to put words in peoples mouths.

what defines something as music to u? there is a definition to music, but if u go by that definition everyone is a musician.

 

being able to read music is good- and often important in western based society-especially in the last like what- 200 years?. But tribal societies have been making bad ass beautiful and sophisticated music passed down by oral tradition since time immemorial- with both their voices, and instruments.

I think it's a vital skill that SOME musicians should know...like classical pianists or people who want conservatory levels. Which is fine of course- but only ONE means to a certain end.

i think the best way to be a musician is to learn on your own at first and develop your own style. Then take theory to master it and be educated about your instrument.

People who take lessons from the start are boring as fuck to watch and listen to. They're too brainwashed and think everything needs to be played a certain way
