I have a dread with hemp wrapped around it, and the hemp smells DISGUSTING when it's wet. Not the good hemp smell. Not like mold. Maybe a hint of wet dog in there, I dunno. Probably because it's five months old, and has picked up the smells of whatever it's been around when wet, etc.
It gets washed along with the other dreads. However, it just smells like shit (not literally) when it's wet and sometimes even when it's dry.

Any suggestions on how to clean up the smell? Cutting the wrap out is not really an option. I like it too much.

I've had a hemp wrap in for 3 years. Smelled when it got wet for the first 6 months or so, now its fine. Wet hemp + wet hair = bad smell.

Im a fan of mold, it smells nice to me....lol (just joking)

But seriously, Ive always been a fan of naked dreads, there are alot of horror stories about what can happen underneath dreadwraps. I thought about it when I first started out, but im really glad now that I have naked dreads...

fallingsky, I think amybird is dead on with the essential oils idea.. Just infuse that wrap with some essential oil of your choice once in a while, that should help out with the nasty smell?

My hair used to have tons of beautiful sentimental dread wraps but one day I just could not longer stand having smelly mouldy dread wraps so I cut them off at the top of wear the wrap started and it was soooo satisfying then I made art out of the wraps. I miss them, but they got knarly.

Don't know what else I can suggest- tea tree and backing soda help get rid of fungi a little.
