the Shankar album that comes to mind is "the sounds of india" - he talks a bit about the different ragas, plays the scale before each raga and mentions the time signature for each tune....

the other album that i'm most fond of is simply titled "ragas", with Ravi and Ali Akbar Khan

indian classical music is so happening, it inspired me to get a sitar of my own - that was about 15yrs ago - i'm no maestro, but love to get lost in the meditative art of playing :)

I never bought many albums. I had a few back in the sixties, a Crosby, Stills, and Nash album, with them sitting on the front porch somewhere, a Sly and the Family Stone album, and one with Ravi Shankar playing ragas with Alla Rakah ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alla_Rakha ), a fine, well-known tabla player who passed away of heart failure upon learning of his daughter's death, in 2000.

This album was so formative to me, influencing my musical preferences for the rest of my life. My son, 22, and a classical guitar student, has also learned to appreciate Indian sitar and tabla music. One of the CD's presently in our car is one of his selections, featuring mostly tabla, with some interesting vocalizations of the rhythms accompanying and emulating the sound of the tabla.

I also like the sound of the veena, which often accompanies Indian music, having a drone-like quality.

You can't go wrong with Ravi Shankar or Alla Rakha, in my opinion. :D

I have a thread on the first page here called Ravi Shankar. In it I uploaded 2 albums for you all. I highly recommend the second one.

Give a listen to Ravi Shankar's daughter, Anoushka, too. She's as good as Ravi, although her style is different.
