    hey guys :)
i need some help at trying to fix my bf dreads. everything is cool and bueno except for the loose roots.. which aren't normal ones since they are about 10cm or 4 inches long and they don't want to dread at all. to make things worse, the sections that were done when he got dreads, have become smaller meaning that there is a lot of hella loose hair and i don't know how to make them a bit more tidy. on top of it all some have fallen off because they were literally hanging by a thread... and yes it makes me sad because it made me realize that the situation is bad :(
so it would be very helpful to share your suggestions as i'm trying to make things better for his dreads today.

    thanks in advance

    here are some pics too:

If that was me I'd use a needle (a bit bigger than a regular sewing one to make it easier to thread hair into the eye) and thread some of those hairs into the dreads. I've done that lots with some of my loose hairs which were becoming long and showing no interest in joining the dready party. It may create some slightly uneven tension in the dreads for a couple of days, then they'll be fine :) It's really quick and easy and doesn't damage things or cause more bits of hair to pop out like crocheting sometimes can.

And some of those bigger patches of loose hair, maybe twist and rip into new dreadlets?

is he washing his hair with anythinh that he should'nt? ya know like shampoo with a conditioner as it may be preventing his dreads from knotting? or if hes not washing his hair and its greasy that might stop it from knotting too. Not that it looks greasy ....just making suggestions.

he's not washing hair with anything he shouldn't anymore, he's usnig kboy bar (haha "gayboy" xD).. he used to wash them with regular shampoo for a year or so at the beginning. his hair gets greasy in about a week but is still at the same time really dry (dreads, not the roots). idk what to moisturize them with.. any suggestions?

and thanks for the suggestions :)

yeah i like amy's idea of twist&ripping the larger sections of loose hairs and either letting them be their own locks, or weave them into the existant ones. i hope this shit doesn't happen to me. did he ever do any sort of clockwise rubbing at the roots?

vig, he didn't do that much clockwise rubbing, so basically i can say no :p

lux, he has backcombed hair with lots of wax at the beginning. joining them together is an option too yes, but i don't think it ould solve the loose hair problem. i'm weaving the loose hair in somehow.. but i have to admit i'm not that good at t&r -.-

    thanks again :)

I'd definitely dread up the large loose sections, whether by twist/rip or by backcombing. I'm just wondering why his hair isn't tangling unless he's using conditioner or a conditioning shampoo, or just fuckin' with it too much... or maybe he keeps it in a ponytail all the time *shrugs*. One way or another, something is preventing it from tangling. As far as moisturizing it... if it's too dry, aloe vera gel can help, just be sure not to leave it in there too long, as it can go bad.

Also, I've heard a few people complain about the kboy bar causing residue/buildup, so be wary of that if he's using it. If you want a cheaper alternative, baking soda mixed in with water's good to use. There's a thread at the top of this forum with a ton of "recipes" for stuff to wash dreads with. For the ones that have become thin at the root, you could follow Amy's advice and thread some of the loose hair into the thin dreads to thicken it back up.

I have the same type of hair as your bf. Pin straight, greasy at the scalp and dry damaged ends (and my hair has never been dyed or anything.. virgin hair and it still breaks and everything at the ends). I used the knotty boy soap and it left my scalp gummy. I just use baking soda a couple times a week and it really has cut the grease out BIGTIME.

I agree that the bigger portions should just be T & R'd to get some knotty happening. If he doesn't want to do anything like backcombing or T&R, you could try adding beads to his hair and sewing them in if they just slip down the dread and do not hold the loose hair in. Or even just use some wool to make mini wraps at teh base to promote the loose hair to start start jiving with the oldy stuff.

Just some other thoughts/ideas for ya. :)

The wax is prohibiting the hairs from moving, thus every bit of the hair above it is stuck in its undreaded position. Remove the wax, and, I hate to say it, he may have to start over without it. If all the ends are dreaded into the end of the dreads, the shaft of the hairs can't knot, nor dread. Good luck!

ah well.. i did the deep cleansing with a lot of soda, first time for him. booy was that water yucky after that. we did it 3 times and he now promised to wash only with soda and almost boiling water (because we both were really shocked). we're still gonna try to take the wax out and hope for the best.. that is not having to cut and redo..
the wrapping idea is good too :)

i'll try to finish by tomorrow and maybe share some pics of the outcome

    thanks guys :)
