Is there anyway of getting rid of blackfly w/out using chemicals ?? I have a few aloe babies and don't want to harm them by using chemicals, the mother plant will take it but the babies wont Will venus flytraps help at all will they get rid of them ?
There are no gardens to get ladybirds from but I guess flytraps could be the answer would venus flytraps help tho ??? done some reserch on this and apparantly diluted washing up liquid 1sp to 3 litres of water sprayed on the plant helps and doesn't kill the plant and can be used on edible plants too gonna try this !!!
oh yeah,, washing up liquid (duh, i use that) though ive never found it to be hugely effective can you grow nastursiums anywhere nearby? blackfly LOVE them,, thus taking them away from the aloe.. re the ladybirds, theres online sites that sell the larvae which you leave to grow/hatch/develop... but theyll probs just all fly away
Hi, they make me smile when I hear about them and seem to cause no harm. ... Always check with your physician before using any herbal or other family remedy. I edited out the link. Sorry, can't have links in posts. Peace, poor_old_dad
This is kind of an old post, but if you're still interested, you can use "Bacillus thuringiensis variety israelensis" in the water for mosquito and black flly larval control. If instead of "ladybirds" you want ladybugs, there is a "Stay Home" type. I've used them and the "Bacillus thuringiensis variety israelensis" with great results. The Venus Fly Traps will catch the flies and they're really cool to watch, but it takes a lot of them to do much good. If you want more info let me know. Poor old dad!! Where have you been young man?? We thought you may have died.. Good to see your six feet up an not six feet under..
Well, I haven't really been living, but I ain't dead yet either. Over the past year or so there have been problems with utility companies and other thieves; my health, neighbors and finances, the tax man and other legal issues; family stuff... You know how it is. You get down a little and the bastards start piling on. I can't say I'm really back “up and going again”, but I seem to be heading that way. I'm still here at my farm, well, land. The farm activity has pretty much stopped and to tell the truth, I don't know if it'll be re-started. I'm very much thinking I'll just retire and return to hobby gardening. Gardening for the fun of it, instead of trying to grow enough tomatoes, peppers, shatakii, whatever, to be able to pay the power bill, or the kids teeth problems, or ... I feel sure you know where I'm coming from. How's ya'll's world? That side of the kudzu patch being good to you? Peace, poor_old_dad
I've never known aloe to succumb to blackfly. Best defense is adequate circulation and sun, and some washing up soap when they are really bad. And soak the potting soil with that soap. Or repot with sterile soil. They can multiply in soil in the pots. Soak the pots put them out in the sun and let them dry out before the next watering. And don't reuse old soil until you've put it outside to dry and cure.
I'm not sure if they realy are black fly to be honest, they are realy tiny fly's a bit like a flea but slightly bigger, any ideas ???
