"Call me Johan. My parents did, or nearly did. They called me John" Hello everybody. My name is John. And I've been coming to the hipforums for around 10 years now. Here I am returning once again from my longest hiatus to date. Since it's been so long and I've no doubt missed so much (including this year's Glastonbury Festival) I thought a spot of karma would be just the ticket to get reaquainted The quote at the top there is from my favourite book, Kurt Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradel". It is also where my username Bokonon comes from. Bokonon is a character in the book who along with a friend upon discovering a fictional island, decide they should part ways and seperately form a government and a religion. Reason being... Well, I'll let you read it for yourselves! I'm 25 years old and live in a town called Washington. Lot of history there, most notably... Um, most notably being the town Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame hails from! But more impressive perhaps the ancestrial home of America's first president George Washington. It lies between Sunderland and Newcastle Music is my thing - I collect and proudly display my albums which are about 700 strong. I also love playing many instruments from guitar, to harmonica, to thumb pianos. Latest addition to the instrument collection being a Stylophone. And yeah, they're as awesome as they look! These days I'm heavily into health and fitness too. I jog, cycle, weight train and do wing chun kung fu. The first 10 years of my life revolved around playing football and now those druggy teen years are out of the way I've found I still love running around like a loon, jumping about and finding thrills in adrenaline releasing activities! Not sure where we go from here I guess that's for you fine people to decide. Hope you're all well and smiling! Take care x
Hullo John, sorry you didn't make it to Glasto this year. What are your album / new band recommendations from this year so far?
Hahaha Aw, that's cracked me up! Worry not, fingermouse. I'm a nice zombie Hey Sal, how're tricks, bud? I haven't read 'Moby Dick', no. Nearly called him Nick there! And for some reason I imagine that would of offended some folk had I not spotted it. I loved the James and Giant Peach book as a kid. And I'm also very fond of the Bob Dylan song '115th Dream'... So I dare say I would be a fan, yes Hiya Jon! Did you have a good Glastonbury? Were you up in the fire tower again? (Is it cool to ask questions in the karma kafe? In my own post I mean). Gosh, I'm not really on the ball when it comes to new artists coming through. I should be I know! I've had to pop along to a search on the subject. And I think these... The Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blizt! ... Are both really cool. And I've got to give a nod to Lily Allen The Song, 'It's Not Fair' I kinda adore! Other new bands that have been grabbing my attention include Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, TV On The Radio. I caught a tune on the radio by The Maccabees which sounded canny. And delving into the past is always fun - Silver Apples have made an impression. Check out 'I Have Found Love'. And oh yes, I've just remembered there the marvellousness of Rory Gallagher! That guy is awesome. Hiya opel - Do you get to sample the sights of Washington much? Spot of shopping at the galleries?
http://www.cs.uni.edu/~wallingf/personal/bokonon.html I really appreciate that someone put the books together like that. Great stuff!
Have you ever seen the movie call "The Beach"? It has Leo Dicap-hisface in it. I think that movie may be based on your book..? I don't know, just a guess. That movie is sick for sure. I'm sure the book was even better (if it is the book lol)
Ay, PeaceInTheStreets Aye, I thought 'The Beach' was a canny flick. I particularly liked Robert Carlisle in a, crickey this dude is terrifying kinda way! And the computer animated sequence was neat. It wasn't based on the book though, no. But, check this out... http://movies.about.com/od/dicaprioleonardo/a/catscradl070705.htm Very strange!
