Hi, To start off yes im one of those impatient people that have been trying to grow my hair on and off for about 5-7 years and fail all the time and get it cut... this time on going off on my travels i thought this would be perfect timing to just let it do its own thing but when i was in bangkok i came across a load of stalls that do extensions.... My hair was already just below my chin and curly (good for Dreadlocks) but i thought what the hell i can just shorten them as the real ones grow..... they promised me all i had to do was spin them and just take care of them and wash them once every 1 to 2 weeks?? I dont know alot about dreads but obv that was not the case.... I managed after about 3 weeks to obtain a 0.7mm crochet hook as there was hair coming out everywhere from the extensions and its a job that has to be done everyday!! for a few hours!! I have one or two fall out a week which i try to attach back on but the longer i have had them ( about 3 months now) the harder they r to attach?? the ends of the hair ( when dread falls off) is a little greasy but not bad ? do i have to wash ends first?? The fact is i really want to see this through and hopefully soon start cutting back the hair?? but maintaining the back is really hard on your own and im traveling on my own , also there is no where in s/e asia apart from thailand that can do it but i am off to new z next month?? can anyone help?? any information will be really appreciated..... Cheers..
just forget the extensions, sounds like they're cheap and crappy. if you want dreads just don't brush your hair while you travel and you'll have em soon enough. sounds like you have a bad habit of fiddling with your hair too much.
Yeah i know the stalls your talking about, on ko san road? Had guys with 3 inch long hair walking around with 24 inch long "dreads" in about 2 hours. Pissed me off considering the time and patience i'd put into and mine and they still looked shit. I hope you didnt put to much money into it. Just get rid of the extensions and start to grow real dreads. I dont know what the point of them is, you might as well go and buy a dread wig.
definitely get rid of the extensions. seem like they are far more trouble than they're worth. just take the time away to be free, don't look in mirrors that much to examine your hair. wash it with water and let them be. dreads will form in no time!
I have to agree, I would lose the extensions and just continue on with your natural hair. IT is definitely long enough on its own.
and when u get a loose hair in your real dreads dont worry aboutr it dont start crochetting or you'll be rioght back into the constant crochetting trap. i wouldnt remove the extentions now as they being there can help the natural hair begin to dread, but in just a few weeks as the normal hair becomes knotty and holds together id chop those damnh things off till then they are as good as a bead or peyote stitch at hgolding the section together. till it starts to dread on its own.. unless the extentions are woven in to yoitrr real hair to the scalnp, then id remove them completely and just let the hair dread.. traveling is a great waty to dread nooone you know to judge ya and your not going to be in front of a mirror for hours getting ready evcery day. go spend 3 weeks in the wilderness and you'r bound to come out knotty
