Because you forget to preface all these discussions with "I"m not propositioning you for sex, but..."
i think some people feel their income is a part of their identity or some kind of reflection of something and feel uncomfortable when it doesn't match their self image
a lot of people find it disrespectful to ask someone how much they make...i really dont mind telling people how much i make unless its someone i know makes less then me than i just feel bad talking about it because im sure people dont like to hear they make less than someone
I try not to tell people. it can cause dissent and distrust in the workplace. if someone doesn't like that you make more than them, etc. plus its just no one's business but your own. I've heard a story about a woman who was a CNA and found out her male CNA coworker made a helluva lot more than her for the same work, same hours, and it caused all sorts of drama.
I lost my job in January. I am on unemployment until I start school again in the fall, where I will live off college loans, and a government grant program. Anyone here ever been on unemployment? Seen the look people get when you tell them? It sucks. They look at you like you are sub par. Cause it was totally my fault I got laid off. The economy sucks. I gotta eat. My dog has to eat. I have bills to pay! Rent! WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO?! Become homeless? Why do people see shame in someone getting help when it is there waiting for us? It's not like we asked to lose our jobs. Its not like we wanted the U.S. economy to go belly up. So I don't tell people. Being judged by someone based on one fact that they don't even know the circumstances behind got old fast. Sorry I got a little bitchy, its just how I feel about it!:toetap05:
You got laid off, but you should get another job. Not live off unemployment. People glare because living off unemployement means you're living off other people's tax dolalrs that WE WORK FOR. The rest of us WORK for a living instead of leeching off others. And the economy isn't that bad anymore, I'm tired of people using it as an excuse.
Well considering she paid into unemployment taxes while she was working, it's technically her money... You are uninformed, and should learn to educate yourself before spouting your bullshit. I have no qualm telling people how much I make. Didn't matter to me when I was making 11k, and it didn't matter to me when I brought in over 30k. It's just a number, and I got by fine on both of those numbers...
Getting by is a piece of piss. If you don't pay attention, your expenses will almost always equal your income, but if you're smart you can get by on so little most people wouldn't believe you.
You make it sound as though I sat on my ass and watched t.v. all day, laughing about it. I tried to get another job, I went to what seemed like a million interviews, and you should not be passing judgment based on a little paragraph I wrote to contribute to a conversation, or at all for that matter! I did not come in here to be criticized by the likes of you. You are one of the masses, just as I said in my previous post. I refuse to feel shame over circumstances that are totally beyond my control. Shame on YOU for being so childish and mean spirited!
Yeah, that's a major factor. If they're not making what they feel they should have been making by this time, it seems to reflect on their motivation and ability to plan.
I think people are reluctant because, even if the two make the same for the same job, someone always ends up upset. I knew I was pissed that some woman was making as much as me because she's a total incompetent. She probably felt the same about me. Its a no win situation. And, Mele,... The original question wasn't asking about unemployment, so it seems you got a little overly sensitive about it. However, the negative attitude people have about unemployment makes it understandable. IMHO, unemployment is there in case shit happens, like insurance. If you are doing your best to get back on your feet, that's honorable. I think most people on unemployment, like you, are just down on their luck. There are a good number of people who use it like a convenience, which is shameful, though. I think that's where people get bad attitudes about unemployment
