In light of current events let People Power commence!!!....let the revolution begin here!

    Dear All,

We are going to hit close to 95p or more a litre by the summer. Do you want petrol prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent united action.

This suggestion makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we would not continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message
reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (And not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together, we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
Action: It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p) Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.

It's important to realise that fuel cost isn't just about selfish motorists finding their way through polluted streets. The money that motorists spend on fuel to get to work could also be spent on their families rather than lining the government's pockets. Pollution and congestion is a totally seperate issue.

It's also about food and health. Everything we buy has to be transported to the shops and market places. Ambulances and fire engines need fuel to do their jobs and this is payed for by your taxes. The way that fuel is taxed effects every single one of us and worsens our overall standard of living.

However I don't agree with a boycott of just one company ... I think we should go back to the blockades of before and this time sit it out to the death

the problem with that is that everywhere near me is an esso or bp garage so id have to travel miles to find somewhere else. so, yeah, im up for it but its just as expensive to get the cheaper petrol as it is to buy the esso or bp which is there 30 seconds down the road. they are everywhere.

personally im happy walking everywhere like i did before i could drive. or just hopping on a train or a bus if i want to go further. or taking a nice walk out to the villages to see my friends. i survived before, people survived before petrol and electricity and oil and stuff so why cant we do it now.

we are one lazy bunch of people.

This isn't actually about fuel at all, its about people trying to change things, i do reaslise that we need fuel, its just that these companies are setting the prices extremely high. its something that needs to be changed, to honest with you i don't even drive so maybe i should do that before i start trying to change things that don't even regard me, please accept my apologies. you have some pretty good points there that need to be looked at. Lets just stop driving and see what happens! i think i could do it, he he

You could get a diesel engine and start making bio-diesel. It only costs about 40p per litre to make. It's illegal to not pay taxes on it when making home made bio-diesel, but the law, in this case, seems to be rather immoral, and so would lend itself to being broken....

Bio diesel is great when it works and easily obtainable here in Brighton , personally my van ran on petrol so i converted it to run on LPG which used to be a by product of petrol .... http://www.greenfuel.org.uk/

I don't think the problem is quite that simple. Of course I don't want to give money to the global corporations but, equally, lower petrol prices means greater consumption of fossil fuels. Maybe higher prices would be better for the planet as we'd all use our cars less. Or would that mean that only the rich could afford it? There are so many social, economic and ecological questions here that we need to think about

I agree in a way, we are far too overdependent on fossil fuels as a species, and it's destroying the planet and us. Unfortunately high tax on petrol isn't for any environmental initiative, it is to line the government's pockets. I agree with re-distributive income based tax, tax the rich, feed the poor and all that. VAT hits everyone though. Everyone needs petrol, most people drink alcohol and a lot of people smoke. It hits the poor harder than the rich, like you said. So if petrol is an essential need, I don't think it should be so expensive. At the same time, you are right. we really need to re-think a lot of our ideas. Petrol is a need, but only because we've constructed it as one. We've built an entire society around oil and profits. This can change, and it will do. But I think we need to think about how. It's like an addiction, of the worst kind. We just need to work out how to kick the habit, before it's too late....
