I called someone an N the other day, and well I was drunk, and I didn't mean it maliciously or anything. I hope no-one was offended, if they were I apologise. Generally speaking I don't like censorship, but there are words that I tend to avoid using most of the time. If I feel like swearing I usually say bollocks, fuck, wank or bugger.

  2. I hate the word 'bugger' and it's not really that offensive. I'm a fuck and c**t user. I can't remember ever having used the n word though. Not that offends me it's just not part of my vocabulary.

What about "buggerlugs"? I laugh a little when I hear that word being used.

So, banning words that offend others would be a bad thing?

Giving the power of censorship to those who are quick to take offense is profoundly wrong. There are few worse abuses of passive-aggressive power than brandishing bruised feelings as a means of squelching dialog.

See this discussion. It's related to this from my perspective.

No more wrong than giving the power of free speech to people who are racist.

"Yes, its use is protected by the concept of Free Speech. No, it is never acceptable, in my opinion.
    It depends on the context."

Where's the option for all three?

I believe it is protected under free speech.

I believe it is never acceptable for use in conversation or in reference to someone; I would never use it in my day to day talk. I know that some people are trying to "reclaim" the word and use it in an affectionate way, but I think that just shows a lack of appreciation for its historical context.

AND, it all depends on the context; many books use the word because it was prevalent when they were written and it can be used in a historical and aritistic context, which I find acceptable.

    Just my 2 cents

I think racists should be free to make idiots of themselves and the rest of us should be free to ridicule them.

so you ban ******, where does it end? someone is offended by lots of words somewhere..

i mean look at this list,

    http://www.noswearing.com/dictionary

you cant ban one word and not expect other groups of people to come up and say other words should be banned..

    its just a ridiculous proposal..

I've never understood why women get so mad when that word is used. Admittedly it is not one of my favourites, and to call someone a C is pretty offensive. But if I was to call someone a C, I am not calling them a female genitalia, I am calling them a scumbag, a selfish moron, a violent idiot or a ...I dunno... a fuck head! You know....

It is not a word that, according my defintion, has any association with a females bits. I like vaginas, clits, pussies, these are all neutral or nice words to describe it. C, however, is not.

i live in the bible belt. many people consider that to be taking the lords name in vain whether you do or not..

so how does that work? is it ban the words YOU feel are offensive or ban the words anyone may be offended by??

thats the whole point.. you cant pick and choose unless you consider EVERYONES feelings ..
