Came across a website by accident that said Valerian Root was safe for dogs. It has a calming affect just like for humans. Then I looked around on the web and found many websites that suggest this. Does anyone here use this herb for their dogs? I take it for myself as I have insomnia issues. I had never thought about using it for dogs. Am considering it for my hyper Bishon...

It makes sense that Valerian Root would not harm a dog in low doses, but what I use for my dogs (Border Collies), especially on a night like tonight with all the firework noises, is called Bach's Rescue Remedy and it works really well at calming them down and you can get it at any health food place.

Of course, as a second safeguard to drown out the ruckus outside, I have my stereo on playing the Doors too.

Well tonight I went ahead and gave it a go. He was freaking out cause of the fireworks. Barking up a storm. I opened one of my capsules and just gave him a little of the powder. Since I don't know how much is appropriate, but since he is a little dog, I know a whole capsule would be too much. My health food store doesn't carry any calming stuff for dogs. I'm sure I can order some online, but I was hoping to find an appropriate dosage of the Valerian since I always have it on hand for myself.... Guess I will keep looking!
