Several tasty meals can be made in just minutes with a single inexpensive appliance - the "Sunbeam Hotshot." This gadget heats water to boiling in only 30 seconds, allowing for first-rate pastas and other dishes with no preparation and very little cleanup. Microwaves become totally obsolete. Also use it daily for hot teas. Here are a few of my favorite new Hotshot recipes... (most rely on dehydrated ingredients but the dishes are very flavorful) Rice & Bean Burrito - Mix dried pinto & black beans & instant rice, add boiling water, stir, cover, and begin to gather your wrap and tortilla chips. In 2-3 minutes everything will be ready. Crumble some chips into the burrito, add a little salsa & that's that. (If you're feeling especially festive add a bit of cheese) Total cost for the meal (+cheese) = around $2.00 Pastas - The possibilities here are almost limitless. Usually I have Mai Fun with rice cakes. Thai Kitchen offers several highly regarded instant rice noodle soups at about $0.75 retail. Their seasonings are excellent, & the company tells me that soon they'll be offering them in bulk !!! Otherwise, typically I'll use veggie bouillon cubes & some dehydrated veggies for added flavor. This avoids smack ramen and is quite tasty. In the Italian style, wheat or flour noodles can be "kicked up a notch" with some sun-dried tomato or basil pesto. Classico has A+ pestos on the shelves. Tofu and artichoke help, too. In any case, a knockout lunch usually costs under $1.00! * With a George Foreman LMFRGM, fresh grilled veggies would open up a world of new possibilities... imagine grilled portobellas in the dorm room! * Also check out other fine dehydrated soups... lentil and split pea are both widely available... (I generally steer clear of "Cup o' Soups.") * Another popular healthy lunch/snack/dessert is yer fav. nut butter on yer fav. healthy bread loaded with honey, raisins, cinnamon applesauce and whatever else you can find - I prefer granola or (in a pinch) MG cheerios Very tasty! These dishes taste much better than most of the campus dining options and eliminate the tendency to go for fastfood or pizza when your room is a barren wasteland of Ramen, Mac&Cheese & similarly boring and unwholesome foods. Any other recipes/suggestions or fine dormroom dining tips???
