"Amos n Andy" is a tv show made back in the early 1950s.It featured a mostly black cast with some of the most talented actors of that era.I've never seen it,however from my understanding and talking to people that viewed the show it's a classic very entertaining family type tv show.It was banned from being shown in the US years ago for racial steroetypes.Does it stereotype black people,I'm sure it does, but it was also the first show to feature black actors playing doctors, lawyers, businessmen etc.--Alot of shows stereotype ALL types of people, so what.--Why is this still kept off the air?Mainly because of 'political correctness' which is another word for censorship.Countries like Russia and China ban alot of tv/movies too.It does not make it right. --I say bring back this show,so I and alot of people can view it.
A sidenote:If some people are so sensitive or politically correct, they can still view The Cosby Show, one of the most boring, bland tv shows evah,at least in my opinion.
I just found it an over-rated boring show IMO.--Show like "Sanford and Son" and others are far better, with bigger talent and far more likable characters.
i suppose, if you're viewing it from solely an entertainment perspective. tv shows play a lot of roles in society, though.
Neither have I. A lot of things that are supposed to be "classic" turn out to be shite. So, with out knowing more...I'm going to say: Leave it in peace.
Persoanally I've tended to watch TV for a bit of an education. Life is too short to be entertained all the time.
odon,I've spoken to people older than me who viewed the show, and said it was very, very well made and an excellent family show.--I've also read the few reviews on it on IMDb,and they were good reviews.--As far as people also viewing tv to learn things,I agree with you and also view tv for that reason.--In a way bringing back a show like Amos 'n Andy would also be educational.People would see the first(or one of the first) mainly black tv shows put on the airwaves.
It could well be a landmark in American TV for all I know. Just sometimes people do give things more credit than they deserve. Also, It might not have the same kind of impact as it did back then. It would be nice to see a few episodes but a complete re-run of a show might be too much. If it fails...then you have stained the good reputation it apparently has.
odon,I don't know if I would call it a landmark show, but I understand what you're saying and the points you made.--However it is a show that should be available for ALL to see and judge for themselves. My guess is most people will say 'why was this banned for so long, what's the big deal'. --Why is something like "Austin Powers" where the main character is such a bumbling stereotype of an Englishman considered by some, not me good entertainment.---A show like "The Beverly Hillbillies" which stereotypes people in the Southern US has and always been aired since its premiere and rightly so--reason, many people enjoy it.--I can go on and on with a list of tv shows etc.--There really is a double standard in the case of "Amos 'n Andy".
i would encourage bringing it back.it was one of my favorite shows when i was a kid.about 10 years ago i watched several episodes on video and when i saw this thread i decided to watch samples from the show on youtube.the shows seemed very well done.some of the best comedic acting i've seen.i read reruns were finally taken off the air in the mid sixties although it still had a loyal fan base.perhaps it's time to give it another chance.it certainly was a better show than anything being made these days.on the other hand there are so few shows from the early 50's on anymore even on channels like tv land.
You of course are referring to The Cosby Show in that comment.--You brought up a very good point which I disagree with.--I think shows like Sanford and Son,The Jeffersons and a few of the other black cast sitcoms of the 1970s broke down alot more stereotypes than Cosby ever did.--If the characters are 'likeable',that alone breaks down many stereotypes.--People liked and like the characters and actors in shows like Sanford and Son etc.
It's got to be much better than anything they make these days.--And I agree alot of shows made from the early 50's on are not shown anymore. They used to be.---They should bring back all of them so people can see what 'true' talent and entertainment really is once again.Alot more people would start viewing tv once again.
speaking of the cosby show.i think it was a differant approach to comedy.it was one of the bright spots in 80's television.i think it served the series well that cosby was involved creatively throughout it's run.usually though i enjoy a broader brand of humor but dr. huxtable and his family are one of the best remembered television families.
