lol!! They already have cars that run on alternative sources, like cooking oil lol! But the government doesn't want to lose the oil money, the car money ect ect...I guess if we are going to lose all our oil they will try to solve that problem when it gets here, they sure don't seem concerned about it now. But then maybe that is why bush is over there in iraq taking thier oil....hmm could beee lol! I think living where we live, we would survive even with no electricity and I'm sure others would too...
I haven't read most of this thread, but in response to the original question: people lived for thousands, if not millions of years on this planet without the benefit of oil or electricity. we would be healthier without either.
Like I said before, man will not cease to be, the "Petroleum Man" will. And you see, it's not necessarily the loss of oil that I'm so worried about, it's the fact that the United States is going to do every thing they possible can do to secure the world's remaining oil for themselves. A lot of people are going to die, you know. You think the Holocaust was bad? Heh, you haven't see anything yet. . .
The sense of urgency is now. They managed to get the American people to believe that Iraq was somehow connected to 9/11 for a reason. That reason? To secure the Middle East's oil. Judging by how things look right now, yes. To go backwards? I believe that it will be the governments (being run by the rich people, much like now) that will be fighting off the poorer citizens. But when the last drop of oil is gone, the unprepared will all starve to death. Look around you. It is happening already. It's not exactly a theory, it has happened many times before. Every empire in the history of the world has fallen once it has run out of its main source of energy.
I've read all your points but sorry I'm still not convinced, no offence. We are definitely on the same page with one thing though: that our world needs changing.
Believe what you want, I'm just saying that the falling of our civilization is inevitable. If you don't believe me, look up the Mesopotamians and the Romans. Both went to war when they started to run out of their source of energy; they went to war for more of that energy. Both civilizations fell soon after. Our nation went to war because we are running out of our source of energy, oil. As history as proven, our civilization and way of life is going to fall. Like I've said many times before, it is inevitable. The only thing that would prevent it is a massive change now, but that will never ever happen; people as a majority are too stupid and too ignorant, especially the majority of Americans.
Purplesage what exactly don't you believe? - That there is a finite amount of oil on the earth? This should be self-evident. - That we've hit peak oil or are about to? Whether you believe the last couple years are a blip in the oil-production chart, or actual peak oil, almost every oil expert predicts its coming in the next 10-15 years. Now, the oil production curve is a bellshape (similar to the prodcution curve to a single well), while population (and thus demand) is an exponential. Divide oil-production by population and you'll see a rather sharp decline. - That crude oil is used in almost all aspects of our life? Well it accounts for nearly 100% of transportation energy. Almost all rubber is a petroleum-based synthetic, lots of homes are heated with natural gas. Almost all fertilizers are petroleum-based. Before the use of these fertilizers the population of earth was fairly stable - now its expanding exponentially. When all the oil is gone, food production will crash, and people will starve? How many will survive? I don't know, but it will be catastrophic.
