I know Vietnam is a very obvious, direct cause, but what were some of the indirect causes of the movement? What influenced it, both aesthically (the long hair, beads, etc), philosophy (what influenced the hippie philosophies), and spiritually? Were there any precedents or ''proto-hippie'' movements or ideologies?
I'm not sure about a whole bunch of the specifics but I know it was formed from the disintegration of the beat generation. One of the old hippies posted a thing about what a hippie is, but I don't remember the name of the thread (sorry). However I still have a link to one site he gave that explained the hippie history well: http://www.coopertoons.com/merryhistory/hippies/hippies.html Hope that info is helpful. ☮
I believe it really had to do with the discovery of acid. After testing acid on people a few guys started making it and holding massive trip parties. These parties gave birth to The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin etc. I think that the acid made the people who did it more aware and angry about conformity and war. During this time thousand of young people flocked to the Haight Ashbury area of San Fransisco. Many of the hippies were hungry and on the streets. Free food was provided by a group called the Diggers. Everything was great until "summer of love", acid had been banned and many of the hippies began to move to hippie farms to get away from the problems they faced in society on the streets.
nuclear disarming? that's all i really know there's a book called hippies though my mom said it's accurate i haven't read it though.
i really don't think that is right. there were/are hippies that didn't do acid. just because acid is stereotyped with hippies doesn't mean that was the start of the movement. i mean hell... you've seen albert hoffman right? he wasn't a hippie.
