I was just about to say this :cheers2: (Probably in a much less sophisticated way, of course ) I think a lot of new vegetarians cut meat out without thinking about what else they'll need (that's what I did). You do get hungry if you just dump the meat and don't replace it with anything else. If you get hungry, you start to eat "fattening" stuff like bread and junk food. A lot of meat isn't fatty. I think you can get really healthy chicken, fish, lean read meat, etc. I don't think the majority of vegetarians stopped eating meat because they wanted to lose weight. The key, my friends... Is balance
Here's something that disturbs me about food trends. Idk, but I've been using nothing but real butter for years. My cholesterol was recently checked, it's at healthy levels. My mother uses nothing but fake butter (vegetable oil) has all kinds of issues with weight and her heart. Think of it this way.... How much vegetation would you have to grind up by hand to get one margarine sized tub of vegetable oil? Doesn't seem intelligent or natural, & even bugs won't eat that crap. I eat lots of eggs too... I should point out that I have a less sedentary lifestyle than her. Here's the snopes page on butter vs margarine http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/butter.asp
eggs are in actuality one of the best cholesterol lowering agents there is.. As for the butter its natural.. not altered in any way from its natural form I personally feel most veggies are veggie for the wrong reason n not for the health aspects... therefore so long as it doesnt contain "meat" it doesnt matter what they stuff in their faces. The more food is processed the less healthy it is.. The people are still a product of society today n convenience is still key in what they eatso they are stuffing this garbage food in... We use lard and eat plenty of eggs and other things that many would go over. We are healthy folks n not overweight but at the same time we are active, eat what we grow in its natural form, eat very little additives, preservatives n chemical crap. Our bodies still need the fats etc in there so we eat the most natural form we can and remain healthy.. As a side note ... it had been a few years since seeing most these folks but aside from the fatness the health issues these folks are dealing with at relatively young ages was unbelievable to me...
I use non-hydrogenated margarine with 0 trans fat, mostly because butter is more expensive. We're all healthy weights and activity levels here...but I also don't eat it with a spoon right out of the container...
yeah it's kinda pathetic how many vegetarians don't actually know how to be a healthy vegetarian. If you're going to give up a critical part of your diet it's important that you know beforehand what you're going to have to do to compensate. I've eaten healthily my whole life. My dad is not a vegetarian but he eats extremely healthily, his sister has been a veg since 16 and my mom is a veg too and they are in great shape. I guess it just comes naturally to me to eat healthily, I don't really even like fast food or fried food that much since I grew up without it. I still eat fish, though. I think a lot of vegetarians crave carbs and eat a lot of junk instead of good protein, legumes, etc.
I regularly eat eggs.. I do avoid dairy though- except on special occasions as a treat I'll have a dish that includes cheese and/or butter... and I absolutely LOVE ice cream- though I bar it from my freezer! I try the best I can to filter my diet choices through my rather loose understanding of what my species would get from its habitat. I'm trending toward organic food sources and striving to get meats that do not contain antibiotics or growth hormones. I'm also doing what I can to research genetically modified foods and avoiding them. As you might guess I no longer eat corn. I have a strong suspicion that the industrial adulteration of foods for the purpose of coloring, flavoring, and preserving is weakening the species and responsible for the rise of all manner of conditions that beset our population- from ADHD to depression as well the obvious diabetes, cancers, autoimmune disorders but because trial periods for additives are not long enough (deliberately so) to reveal such long term effects, low grade poisons are being added to the food supply for the purpose of profit without regard to their physical effects. My sense is that such operations like dillis dang gardens will do far more to improve the health of her family than western health care and pharmaceutical giants could ever hope to... partially because garden work counts as exercise!
I was an overweight veggie, not by 50 pounds , but I was heading in that direction. I cut out most high glycymic forms of sugar and flour and have lost 25 pounds in less than two months and am a lot more even with my moods. I think a lot of veggies are fat from sugar. Sugar and corn syrup are evil for peopl with addictive personalities. i wish our goverment would offer agave subsidies. I made an awesome berry and peach cobbler with agave and am making a lemon cake with it tonight. I would still be a fat veggie (or 99.99 percent veggie) if I didn;t find agave and whole wheat pastry flour.
I also think if people worked as hard as Dilli, they could eat what ever the fuck they wanted to. I was watching someonethign on puritanical work ethics last night and Dilli's pictures sprung to my mind. I work hard, but it's not very physical.
I can't stand butter. It's too rich. I use smart balance or coconut oil, unless I am baking somethign traditional that needs butter.I agree that the cheaper margarines out there are horrible for people.
A lot of vegetarians are overweight because they need to compensate for their natural need for animal protein with starch and sugar.
